Man slain in South Boston shooting

Authorities are investigating after a man in his twenties was found with gunshot wounds in South Boston, police said.Around 11:45 last night, officers received a call for a person shot near 1 Costello Circle in South Boston. They found the man - described as in his 20s - with gunshot wounds and life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Anyone with knowledge of the incident is asked to call BPD Homicide at (617) 343-4470.

 

Union treasurer pleads guilty to stealing union funds

FALL RIVER — A former treasurer for a union representing public employees in several southeastern Massachusetts communities has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $60,000 from the union.The Bristol district attorney's office says 55-year-old Pamela Almeida pleaded guilty to a larceny charge. The Brockton Enterprise reports that Almeida was a clerk for the Easton Planning Board and treasurer for Southeastern Public Employees Association — a union representing various public employees in Easton, Mansfield, West Bridgewater and Milton.

 

Warren to call for new federal approach to opioid crisis

BOSTON — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is calling for the federal government to treat the opioid addiction crisis in a way similar to how it attacked the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.The Massachusetts Democrat will be in Boston on Friday to discuss legislation that she and Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings plan to file in Congress.The lawmakers plan to model the bill after the Ryan White CARE Act, which targeted federal funds to areas of the country most impacted by the HIV virus.

 

Wynn casino builder remembered: 'A big man with a big heart'

A 56-year-old construction worker who died this week after being injured on the job at the Wynn Boston Harbor casino in Everett was remembered by his daughter as a “big man with a big heart.”“He was a phenomenal husband. Him and my mom were married 31 years — they were best friends,” said Cassandra Nunes, daughter of Joe Teixeira. “He was an amazing father and grandfather. He lit up a room. He was a big man with a big heart.”

Officers, EMTs treated after possible exposure to fentanyl

HOLYOKE — Two Massachusetts police officers and two emergency medical technicians were been taken to the hospital because of possible exposure to the powerful opioid fentanyl.Police say the officers and the EMTs were responding to an apparent overdose in Holyoke at about 7 p.m. Thursday.Lt. Isaias Cruz says after the overdose victim was revived, the officers started feeling dizzy and weak.Fire Capt. Kevin Cavagnac says the two EMTs also started experiencing symptoms of exposure to fentanyl, which is many time more powerful than heroin.

NOAA extends protection zone to help vulnerable right whales

NANTUCKET, Mass. — Federal ocean managers are extending a voluntary speed restriction zone off of Massachusetts to try to help protect endangered right whales.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration established the zone to protect a group of eight North Atlantic right whales spotted 20 nautical miles south of Nantucket on March 29. The agency says the zone will be in effect through April 12.NOAA asks mariners to route around the area altogether or transit through it at 10 knots or less.
