Worker at Boston-area casino construction site dies

EVERETT, Mass. — A worker helping to build a new casino in the Boston area has died.A spokesman for Wynn Boston Harbor says the 56-year-old man, who was later identified as Joe Teixeira, died on Wednesday.Teixeira had been injured while operating an excavator at the site the day before. The Seekonk man was a four-year employee of J. Derenzo Companies. An investigation into his death is ongoing.A Wynn spokesman on Wednesday called it "a very sad day for everyone at Wynn Boston Harbor."

Church that held 12-year vigil is sold by Archdiocese

SCITUATE, Mass. — The Archdiocese of Boston says it has sold the property of its former Roman Catholic Church St. Francis X. Cabrini in Scituate to a Coptic Orthodox church.The 10,560-square-foot church was sold to St. Mary & St. George Coptic Orthodox Church of Marshfield for $2.45 million, the archdiocese said in a statement.Archdiocese chancellor John Straub says it's "challenging" to part with a church property, but the religious organization wishes them "well in their new church home."

 

Tax collections for March $176M above expectations for month

BOSTON — March tax collections in Massachusetts fell slightly compared to the same month last year, but were still ahead of expectations for the month by about 8.5 percent.Revenue Commissioner Christopher Harding said Wednesday that the state collected $2.24 billion last month, which was $176 million above predictions for March.Harding said state revenue officials had anticipated that corporate and business taxpayers would take advantage of a recent change in the corporate filing schedule that shifted the March reporting deadline to April.

 

Family awarded $4.2 million in lawsuit over cancer diagnosis

BILLERICA, Mass. — A jury has awarded a Massachusetts family $4.2 million in connection with the father who died after receiving a late kidney cancer diagnosis.The Lowell Sun reports the jury found 54-year-old Neil Senna's primary care physician negligent in failing to notify him of a symptom that could have pointed to an earlier cancer diagnosis.The attorney who represented the Senna family in their medical malpractice lawsuit says Neil Senna should have seen a specialist when blood was found in his urine in 2009.

Sex offender returns to prison for second child assault

SALEM, Mass. — A Massachusetts man who previously served prison time for sexually abusing a child is now heading back to prison after pleading guilty to raping another boy.The Salem News reports 27-year-old Scott Deschenes was sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison Tuesday in connection with the March assault.Deschenes was serving probation for his previous conviction when he met the 12-year-old victim. Prosecutors say Deschenes invited the boy to his Salem apartment to play video games and then raped the child.

 

Driver charged in tow truck driver's death still in hospital

ANDOVER — A Massachusetts driver charged with hitting and killing a tow-truck driver last month remains hospitalized with injuries from the crash.The Eagle-Tribune reports that 28-year-old Shiina Dionne faces charges including motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence for the March 14 death of 41-year-old Daniel Coady Jr.Dionne was due in court Wednesday, but her lawyer said she is still in the hospital. He did not specify what kind of injuries she suffered.

 

Lowell's top cop retires after 36 years on the force

LOWELL — The head of the Lowell, Massachusetts, police department has announced his retirement after 36 years on the force.The Lowell Sun reports that Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor sent an email to officers on Wednesday announcing his intention to step down later this month.In the email, Taylor says he did not intend to be a career cop when he joined the force in 1982, but fate took him down that path. Taylor became superintendent in 2013.Taylor said he will miss the camaraderie of the force but is looking forward to his retirement.

 

Former NOAA official's call to save whales irks lobstermen

GLOUCESTER — A letter from a retired fisheries official calling for the lobster fishing industry to take the lead on saving right whales has irked some members of the lobstering industry.The letter from former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration regional administrator John Bullard appeared in the Boston Globe on Monday. Bullard, who retired in January, wrote lobstermen "know best how to save whales" and need to be open to new restrictions aimed at saving them.
