Charlie Baker is gearing up for re-election, the state’s highest court is preparing to weigh in on a major promise from his first campaign — to stop housing homeless in motels — in a fast-tracked case with dozens of families and millions of dollars at stake, officials say.The Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments next month about Baker’s policy of rolling back homeless housing in motels.

 

Man charged with assaulting trooper at Logan

A Rhode Island man was arrested at Logan Airport after he sprayed liquid at a state trooper and spit in the trooper’s face, police said.Kevin Luczak, 28, of Narragansett was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.

 

Mom sues Boston, cops over fatal shooting

The mother of a schizophrenic man fatally shot by a Hub officer in 2016 has filed a federal civil rights suit, saying police and emergency medical technicians were inadequately trained to deal with people with mental health disabilities.Hope Coleman, mother of Terrence J. Coleman, 31, sued claiming her son’s constitutional rights — under the Fourth, Fifth and 14th amendments — were violated as well as his rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act when a Boston police officer fatally shot him on Oct. 30, 2016, the lawsuit says.

 

Paperwork filed to fire cop who assaulted Uber driver

​Police Commissioner William B. Evans plans to recommend firing the suspended Boston cop convicted of assaulting an Uber driver in Southie and taking off with his car.Paperwork has been filed to terminate Michael C. Doherty, 43, in the wake of a guilty verdict on charges he assaulted Luis Blanco, the Uber driver ferrying Doherty from the North End to his South Boston home after a night out drinking with friends.“The commissioner is going to recommend termination,” police spokewoman Maisha Miraj told the Herald. “Paperwork has been filed.”

 

Boston schools face shakeup, departures

Top Boston Public Schools personnel are headed for the door amid a district reshuffling that has some parents questioning the direction of the system.Instructional superintendent Alexandra Montes McNeil is leaving July 1 for a position in Needham as assistant superintendent for human resources. Instructional superintendent Marice Edouard-Vincent is interviewing in Medford for a superintendent position this week, according to Medford Public Schools.

 

Julian Edelman helps close in on Michigan school threat

Julian Edelman made another nice catch when he became alarmed about a kid threatening to shoot up his Michigan middle school.The New England Patriots receiver, who was out all last season with a busted knee, was alerted to the troubling comment on his Instagram account last month by a fan, his agents told the Herald last night.Edelman quickly notified his assistant here in Boston and she then found the threat on the social media site and called city police.

 

Silver Line tunnel shut down

Pieces of concrete falling onto an MBTA passenger platform forced the closure “until further notice” of the Silver Line tunnel connecting South Station to the Seaport, T officials said yesterday.“There were no known injuries as a result of this incident.” said T spokeswoman Lisa Battiston.Buses running on surface streets will replace tunnel service to Silver Line Way until the tunnel is cleared for safe use, Battiston said.

 

SWAT officer injured by training grenade

A Middleboro police officer was seriously wounded during SWAT exercise when a training grenade detonated in his hand, police said. Bridgewater police and fire said they were called about 11 a.m. today by a member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council's SWAT team who requested an ambulance for an officer with a hand injury, police said. Medics found a Middleboro police officer with a "serious wound" to one of his hands, police said.

Julian Edelman made another nice catch when he became alarmed about a kid threatening to shoot up his school.The Patriot receiver, who was out all last year with a busted knee, was alerted to the troubling comment on his Instagram account last month, the New York Times reported.Edelman alerted his assistant here in Boston and she then found the post and called police.What she found was a line that stated: "I’m going to shoot my school up watch the news.”
