Silver Line tunnel closed after chunks of concrete fall in station

The Silver Line tunnel connecting South Station to the Seaport is closed after chunks of concrete fell, T officials said.Buses running on surface streets will replace tunnel service to Silver Line Way until the tunnel is cleared for safe use, said T spokeswoman Lisa Battiston.Construction on Congress Street in the vicinity of the World Trade Center Station on the Silver Line caused loose pieces of concrete to fall on to the inbound platform of the station, impacting service, Battiston said.

BOSTON — Massachusetts' highest court will decide whether a hospital can be held responsible for the death of a woman who was killed by a former mental health patient.In 2012, Tu Nguyen was ordered to be civilly committed for up to six months or until there was no longer a "likelihood of serious harm." He was released 11 days later. Weeks after that he stabbed to death his neighbor.Attorneys for Mary Miller's family say Nguyen was still dangerous and the hospital violated the court order by releasing him so early.

 

Mayor Walsh redirects $2.4M for behavioral support in Boston Public Schools

Mayor Martin J. Walsh is redirecting $2.4 million to fund eight additional nurses and 12 more psychologists and social workers for Boston Public Schools after parents, teachers and school mental health experts called for more behavioral health support for kids.The city is shifting money previously reserved for health care costs to BPS for mental health, city officials announced.

 

Worker killed at Wynn casino site in Everett

A construction worker at the Wynn Boston Harbor casino in Everett has died "after sustaining injuries" at the site, the company said today.“The Wynn Boston Harbor family regretfully learned this morning that a member of our construction team lost his life after sustaining injuries on our site yesterday,” Wynn spokesman Greg John said in a statement. “This is a very sad day for everyone at Wynn Boston Harbor. Our deepest condolences and heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family and coworkers.”

 

Massachusetts Medal of Honor winner being laid to rest

BOSTON — A former U.S. Navy pilot from Massachusetts who received the Medal of Honor for his heroics during the Korean War is being buried at Arlington National Cemetery.The Navy says Capt. Thomas Hudner Jr. will be laid to rest with full military honors on Wednesday during a ceremony scheduled to include a "missing man" flyover by the squadron he flew with during the war.Hudner, a Fall River native and longtime Concord resident, died in November at age 93.

 

Woman charged in crash that killed 'pillar of the community'

EAST BROOKFIELD  — A Massachusetts woman charged with driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a man described as a "pillar of the community" has pleaded not guilty.Cindy Bliss, of West Brookfield, was held on $20,000 bail Tuesday after her arraignment on charges including motor vehicle homicide while intoxicated.Police say the 54-year-old Bliss was speeding when she ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle operated by 78-year-old Alexander Cordy in West Brookfield on Monday. Cordy died at the hospital.

 

Catholic high school, citing declining enrollment, to close

FRAMINGHAM — An independent Roman Catholic high school in Massachusetts has announced that it will close at the end of the current school year because of declining enrollment and financial pressures.The board of trustees at Marian High School in Framingham announced the closure on Tuesday.They say the school's enrollment has declined steadily in the past few years, from 304 students in 2012 to 221 this year. With an incoming freshman class of 16, next year's enrollment is projected to be 185 students.

The Red Sox have a new manager and handful of new faces on the roster.Fenway Park’s got some changes this year as well.Baseball’s oldest park — it opened less than a week after the Titanic sank in 1912 — will have new protective netting, 25 premium field-level seats (the “Jim Beam Dugout”), 30 more seats in left field and a bellyful of new food items. The 2018 home season begins tomorrow when the Sox play ball with Tampa Bay at 2:05 p.m.

 

Marathon security ‘continues to grow’

Public officials say they’re prepared to protect runners and spectators at the 122nd Boston Marathon from any number of threats — including an active-shooter scenario — as the city approaches the five-year mark of the 2013 marathon bombings.“We are laser-focused on finding and stopping any potential threat to this event,” said FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Harold Shaw.
