Police: Lynn woman charged in Nahant carjack

A woman is in custody after allegedly stealing a car and running over the vehicle’s owner in Nahant, authorities said.A 32-year-old woman from Lynn allegedly took control on a vehicle on Wilson Road in Nahant, hitting the car’s owner as she tried to flee, just before 10 a.m., authorities said.The victim and witnesses to the alleged carjacking told responding officers which way the woman drove.

 

State police troop had contracting controversy in 2016

BOSTON — A state police troop currently under investigation for an alleged overtime scam has been previously assessed for contracting irregularities.The Boston Globe reports State Police Troop E pushed thousands of motorists to use Perfection Towing of Watertown when it favored the business with a three-year contract.Members of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and three lieutenants from Troop E also allegedly rigged the system against Perfection Towing's competitors.

 

Harvest of clams continues to dwindle in New England

PORTLAND, Maine — The harvest of soft-shell clams continues to dwindle in New England, where the shellfish are embedded in the culture as much as the tidal muck.Soft-shell clams are also called "steamers" or "longnecks" and they are one of the northeastern U.S.'s most beloved seafood items. But the nationwide harvest fell to a little less than 2.8 million pounds in 2016, the lowest total since 2000.

 

Police: Urine found in library soap dispenser, air freshener

BURLINGTON, Mass. — Police are looking for a man connected to urine being found in a bathroom soap dispenser at Burlington Public library.Urine was discovered by a patron in a cup inside a library bathroom on March 21, police officials said Friday.Further inspection from library staff showed that urine had been poured into the soup dispenser and air freshener.The library reported the incident to police the next day.Burlington police are looking for public help in identifying a man of interest and will continue investigating.

 

Prosecutor, police chief to host overdose antidote training

TEWKSBURY, Mass. — A Massachusetts district attorney and police chief are hosting a free training on how to administer the drug overdose antidote naloxone.District Attorney Marian Ryan and Tewksbury Police Chief Timothy Sheehan will host the training on Monday at the Tewksbury Public Library. Doses of naloxone will be handed out to participants.Naloxone, which is often referred to by the brand name Narcan, can restore a person's breathing after it is injected or sprayed in the nostrils, quickly reviving overdose victims.

 

Fifth-grader wins state geography bee, will compete in DC

CHICOPEE, Mass. — A student from Joseph Estabrook Elementary School has taken top honors in the 2018 Massachusetts National Geographic State Bee.Fifth-grader Atreya Mallanna will represent Massachusetts in next month's final round in Washington D.C.The bee, held Friday at Elms College, had over 100 fourth-to eighth-graders competing to make it to the final round.Atreya won a prize of $200, a visual atlas and a trip to compete in Washington.

 

Boston mayor, hundreds of others climbing steps for charity

BOSTON — Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and hundreds of others are running up 60 flights of stairs to raise money to support victims of child abuse.The "Ginormous Climb" is being held Saturday at 200 Clarendon St, formerly known as the John Hancock Tower.The annual event raises money for the Children's Advocacy Center of Suffolk County, which helps young victims of sexual and physical violence.Walsh is being joined at the event by Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley.

 

2 purported Massachusetts mob associates face sentencing

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Two men convicted in connection with a wide-ranging investigation into organized crime in western Massachusetts face sentencing.Giovanni Calabrese and Ralph Santaniello are scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Worcester.The Longmeadow men were among five area residents convicted in connection with the $20,000 shakedown of a Springfield towing company owner and loansharking. Prosecutors allege they are associates of the New York-based Genovese crime family.They were arrested in August 2016.

 

Deval Patrick's brother-in-law arrested

BOSTON — The brother-in-law of former Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has been arrested for violating a restraining order in an ongoing criminal case.The Boston Globe reports that Bernard Sigh, 66, was arrested Friday on a Milton police warrant.According to the Norfolk district attorney's office Sigh tried to contact the victim in a domestic assault case.Sigh pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Quincy District Court Friday afternoon.

 

2 areas off Massachusetts available for offshore wind energy

BOSTON — The Department of the Interior has announced that two additional areas located off Massachusetts are now available for commercial wind energy development.U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Friday that the area has tremendous offshore wind energy potential. He said the Trump administration supports "an all-of-the-above energy policy and using every tool available to achieve American energy dominance."The two areas total nearly 390,000 acres.
