House leaders to take wraps off state budget plan

BOSTON — A key legislative committee is set to unveil its version of the state's $40 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins in July.The spending plan expected to be announced Wednesday by the House Ways and Means Committee comes amid signs of improvement in the state's overall financial picture. Nine months into the current fiscal year, revenue officials said tax collections were running nearly $900 million above benchmarks.

 

JPMorgan Chase CEO and Detroit mayor to speak at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will be at Harvard University to talk about rebuilding Michigan's biggest city.They're scheduled to speak on campus Wednesday at a discussion titled "Invested in Detroit ." It's being hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics.New York-based JPMorgan Chase says it plans to invest $150 million in Detroit by 2019 as part of its philanthropy efforts.

 

Students angry over news of college closing

NEWTON, Mass. — Students at Mount Ida College in Newton met with their college president about the news the school will be closing permanently at the end of the year.
NBC 10 Boston reports students met in a closed-door meeting with college president Barry Brown on Saturday.One student called the meeting "a waste of time," and that no answers were given for their many questions.

 

Police body camera program will be funded, Mayor Walsh says

BOSTON — A controversial body camera program has been allotted $2 million in funding in Boston's 2019 budget.
The Boston Globe reports Mayor Marty Walsh said the city may start the body camera program in stages once more can be learned from Northeastern University's study on the city. The results come in June.The proposed funding is part of the Democrat's budget, which will be filed this week for review by the city council.

State trooper injured in car crash

STONEHAM, Mass. — A state trooper has been injured during an overnight car crash on Interstate 93.The trooper, who remains unidentified, was stopping to help a disabled vehicle when another car hit the cruiser from behind.WBZ-TV reports both the trooper and person in the first vehicle were taken to Winchester Hospital with back and neck injuries.No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.___Information from: WBZ-TV

 

Man fatally shot in third area shooting in 36 hours

BROCKTON, Mass. — A 24-year-old man has been fatally shot in the third Brockton shooting in 36 hours.State police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office are investigating the death of a man shot shortly after 10 p.m on Saturday.The exact location of the shooting has not been identified. The district attorney's office says the investigation is ongoing and no further details are available.On Friday, a 71-year-old man was hit by a bullet while sleeping in his home. Another occurred earlier on Saturday near Menlo Street.

 

Open Mosque Day aims to dispel misconceptions about Muslims

BOSTON — Islamic communities across Massachusetts are opening their doors to foster better understanding of the faith.Sunday afternoon's second annual "Open Mosque Day" events are being held in more than 20 Islamic houses of worship statewide.Organizers say visitors will be given tours, hear a brief introduction to Islam and observe a Muslim prayer service.Wafaa Wahabi of the American Islamic Center in Everett says the event is intended to help dispel misconceptions about Muslims.
