Officer injured after dragged by vehicle

An Amarillo Police Department officer suffered minor injuries Saturday after responding to an argument that turned into a road rage incident, and a 40-year-old woman is in jail as a result.
At 2:30 a.m. Saturday police received a call from a victim who claimed that a suspect was ramming her car, and she was told to drive toward the police department to meet with officers.
Police said an APD officer who finished his shift was outside and walking to his vehicle when he saw a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer and silver Hyundai pull into APD’s parking lot at high speed.

 

Traffic stops result in $1.3 million in meth

Two traffic stops over the weekend by Texas Department of Public Safety resulted in the seizure of more than 15 pounds of methamphetamine and two arrests.
On Monday, DPS valued the methamphetamine at approximately $1.35 million.
The first arrest occurred on Friday just after 1:30 p.m. when a DPS trooper stopped a 2016 Dodge Journey traveling east on Interstate 40 for a traffic violation near Bushland.
The troopers discovered a suitcase with three plastic-wrapped packages of methamphetamine inside, valued at approximately $365,000.

 

Man arrested after assaulting officer

A man was arrested Sunday morning after hitting an Amarillo Police Department officer while intoxicated, according to police reports.
At 1:10 a.m. on Sunday morning APD officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Mesa Circle to assist the Amarillo Fire Department and American Medical Response units on a medical call.
Morgan Don Pitts, 21, was lying in the front yard of a neighboring home and was being belligerent with medical personnel attempting to help him, according to police.

 

APD continues investigation

The Amarillo Police Department is continuing its investigation into a shooting that occurred Friday night.
APD officers contacted a male just before 8 p.m. at Southwest Second Avenue and Bonham Street who suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee. The victim said he had gone to a home in the 300 block of North Hughes Street to retrieve an item from a male suspect.
The victim said the suspect began shooting at his vehicle. Later, officers confirmed finding multiple bullet holes in the vehicle.

 

AFD names Firefighter of the Year

The Amarillo Fire Department held its Traditions Ceremony on Saturday, an annual event to honor the AFD’s past, present, and future, as well as hand out awards and honors from the previous year of service.
Among the awards presented Saturday was the Brian Hunton Memorial Firefighter of the Year honor, which was awarded to firefighter Matt Amerson.

PACs host informational events in prep for bond vote

Unite For Amarillo, a local PAC in favor of seven propositions in the November ballot that would require city leaders to issue $340 million in bonds, has scheduled informational community meetings for voters beginning Tuesday.
Meetings will be held in school auditoriums from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. each Tuesday this month. October 11th’s meeting will be at Tascosa High School, followed by Caprock High School on the 18th and Horace Mann Middle School on the 25th.

 

Refreshing the weary

Just down the road from Sam Houston Middle School in Amarillo stands Jesus. It isn’t Jesus in the flesh, but an acrylic representation of him.
He was painted on an alley wall of a San Jacinto building in 1989.
Surrounding him are children of all ages and colors, and above the mural perfectly stenciled letters proclaim, “Let the children come to me. – Jesus.”
And the children do come. They pass by on their way to school.
Their voices float from the building itself where the Martial Arts and Athletic Center hosts an after-school daycare.

 

Giving up on Trump?

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation’s top elected Republican, effectively abandoned Donald Trump Monday, telling anxious fellow lawmakers he will not campaign for or defend the floundering businessman in the election’s closing weeks.
Pro-Trump members rebelled in anger, accusing Ryan of conceding the election to Hillary Clinton.

 

Sen. Cruz talks about helping farmers in Friona

Sen. Ted Cruz visited Friona on Monday as part of a three-day agriculture tour in West Texas.
The Texas Republican stopped at Del Rio Dairy and feed manufacturer Hi-Pro Feeds, and later climbed aboard a combine to harvest milo, a crop farmer’s said is losing value.
“Commodity prices are so low that we’re right at the borderline of not being able to produce more than it’s worth,” said Jason Wright, owner of the 285-acre stretch of milo Cruz navigated with the combine,
Milo prices that have dropped about 40 percent in recent years, Wright said.

 

Trump begins to bleed Texas donors

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump’s problems are becoming financial.
Amid turmoil over a video revealing the Republican nominee’s boasts about groping women, some Texas donors are pulling out of two scheduled fundraisers in the state on Tuesday, according to Texas Republicans with knowledge of the events.
