Care for Alzheimer's patients, search for help 'draining'

The dilemma of Kalee Doche is not uncommon. Social worker Joy Gayle sees it frequently.
“Bottom line, this is a place where a lot of folks I see every day fall in,” she said.
Doche, 54, is the caregiver for her husband, John, 55, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Doche was diagnosed at age 52, making him in the 1 percent of those stricken so young with the fatal brain degenerative disease.

 

Family of Clements inmate who died in custody to sue TDCJ

The filing of a civil lawsuit against Texas Department of Criminal Justice and 33 past and present employees at the William P. Clements Unit on the behalf of the estate of former prisoner Alton Rodgers and his mother, Gwendolyn Dolores Rodgers Patrick, is planned for Monday.
Amarillo attorney Jesse Quackenbush said the complaint he intends to file alleges that Rodgers was suffering from tuberculosis, which went untreated by TDCJ staff.
“To deny this type of medical care is without a doubt a crime against humanity,” Quackenbush told the Amarillo Globe-News on Saturday.

In those rare moments when Kalee Doche allows her mind to idle, when it slows down enough from her unrelenting 5 a.m. to midnight pace, that’s when the worry and the stress begin to squeeze her like a vise.
The money. Her son. The future. Her job. And, of course, her husband John, almost the shadow of the man she married 25 years ago.
“The hardest thing,” she said, carefully weighing each word, “is not having the time for him. I’m so stressed out. I can’t be as sweet to him as I want to be.”

 

Tuesday is last chance to register to vote in November

The final day to register to vote in November’s upcoming election is Tuesday and the League of Women Voters will make it possible to register at two locations.
Volunteers will be assisting voter registration at United Amigos supermarket, 3300 East Interstate 40, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and also at the Randall County Annex, 4111 S. Georgia St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Residents can also pick up a voter registration application card at any of Amarillo public library branch. The form must be postmarked by Tuesday.

Randolph Dwayne Sims, who is wanted out of Potter County for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, is this week’s Amarillo Crime Stoppers fugitive.
If you have any information on the location of Sims, contact Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400 or submit a tip on-line at amapolice.org.
An email can also be sent to stoppers@amapolice.org.
If an anonymous tip leads to the location and arrest of Sims, the tipster may be eligible for a reward of $300.

 

Paralegal gala to mark 30th year

The Texas Panhandle Paralegal Association’s 30th year anniversary gala featuring nationally-known body language expert, author, and speaker Jan Hargrave will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Wyndham Garden Ballroom in Amarillo.
Hargrave is a frequent television talk show guest, courtroom witness, and corporation consultant on nonverbal body language communication.

 

60 years later: a WT Homecoming reunion romance

CANYON — Married six months ago, after originally meeting 60 years ago, former West Texas State University Buffalo running back Delmer Tuggle and cheerleader Barbara Beck Tuggle, both 82, embraced Saturday in front of the petrified-wood fireplace at West Texas A&M University’s Alumni Association, she wearing his old letter jacket, he beaming proudly.

Old cars find new owners at auction

A cherry-red 1967 Oldsmobile 442 convertible. A 1995 yellow Land-Rover SUV in near-perfect condition. A 1940 Ford street rod coupe, souped-up with a 19-inch flat-screen television “to watch the game while you drive.”
Tom “Spanky” Assiter’s crew dutifully rolled automobiles to the front of the stage while the legendary auctioneer rattled off prices and features at the Amarillo Collector Car Auction on Saturday. All in all, Assiter Associates and Vintage Auto Haus brought 194 cars forward, splitting the profits 50-50.

Amarillo Planning and Zoning Commission: 3 p.m. City Council Chambers, Third Floor, City Hall, 509 S.E. Seventh Ave. The agenda calls for consideration of rezoning new parcels.
