Himes talks Trump in Stamford town hall meeting

Himes, D-Conn., visited the University of Connecticut-Stamford for the last in a series of town hall meetings with his Fairfield County constituents to discuss topics spanning health care, defense, immigration and trade deals.

Comments from audience members about education, the Affordable Care Act and using so-called “soft power” in dealing with other countries, were met with applause.

A woman from Stamford asked Himes how his constituents could work with other communities and help him advance a Democratic agenda and hold people in office accountable.

Deportation ‘fear’ stirs student rally in Stamford

More than 70 young immigrants attended the rally, which followed last month’s A Day Without Immigrants, a nationwide boycott when foreign business owners closed their shops and immigrants stayed home from work. Martin promised Stamford police will not ask victims or witnesses to crimes about their immigration status. The teenagers were also supported by CT Students For A Dream, an immigrant advocacy group comprised of college students.

Arrest made in attempted murder of teen in Stamford bodega

STAMFORD — A city man already jailed on armed robbery and arson charges related to carjackings of food delivery drivers has now been accused of the attempted murder of a teen inside a West Side bodega, police said.

Tyreik Gantt, 19, of Connecticut Avenue, was charged Friday with two counts of attempted murder and a single count of conspiracy to commit murder.

Gantt has also been charged with torching one of the carjacked vehicles in Stamford after he was caught on surveillance video pouring gallons of gasoline into the back seat of the car less than a mile from where it was found fully en

 

Officials to discuss gun permit bill in Stamford

STAMFORD — Police officials, state legislators and gun control advocates will hold a news conference Thursday morning at the city’s police department to discuss a bill that would require gun carriers to show their permit.

Joining the news conference are state Rep. William Tong; Stamford Police Chief Jon Fontneau; Anthony Salvatore, president of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association; Ron Pinciaro, executive director of CT Against Gun Violence; and other state legislators and police chiefs.

 

High winds cause thousands to lose power

The state is under a High Wind Warning until 11 a.m. Thursday with a steady wind blowing from the west between 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 to 60 mph.

Danbury Muncipal Airport had a peak gust of 63 mph early this morning; Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford recorded 59 mph and Oxford airport saw the peak wind at 57 mph.

Entry into wrong apartment gets Stamford man a burglary charge

STAMFORD-A city man who apparently made his way into the wrong apartment was arrested on burglary charges after he startled a sleeping woman in her bedroom Tuesday night.

Police were called to a Tresser Building apartment building at 10 p.m. on the report of a woman reporting a strange man in her bedroom, a police report of the incident says.

Manuel Mercardo, 49, of Tresser Boulevard, was charged with burg and disorderly conduct and he was held in lieu of a $10,000 court appearance bond.

Blight fine lifted for Stamford couple with garage slur

STAMFORD — A couple who have left a racial slur spraypainted on their garage will not be charged a $100-a-day blight fine, officials said Wednesday.

Heather Lindsay, who lives at the Bull’s Head home with her husband, Lexene Charles, said she will also take up the city on its offer to replace the door on which the word remains in an effort to pressure police to further investigate the incident.

Lindsay has said police never investigated the vandalism or claims that neighbors yelled a racial slur at her husband.
