Stamford businesses to close in immigrant protest

STAMFORD — Stillwater Avenue businesses will close Thursday as part of a nationwide demonstration intended to show the value of immigrants — citizens and undocumented — to the U.S. economy. The strike, organized and promoted through social media and Spanish-language television, aims to draw attention to immigrants who fear deportation under President Donald Trump.

 

Rare bullet tie suspects to Stamford murder

Taking the stand in a hearing at the Stamford courthouse to determine if the state has enough evidence to charge Stamford resident Deshawn Hayes with Gooden’s murder, police officer Ed Rondano said the bullet, a 10 millimeter live round, was found in the car Hayes and two others were pulled over in moments after the shooting.

On an aerial map used for the hearing, a direct line could be drawn from where the shell casings were found in the park to where Gooden was standing and beyond to where bullets that night caused damage to homes at 70 and 74 Merrell Avenue.

Man charged with damaging padded cell in Stamford

The man’s tempter continued to flare at police headquarters where he allegedly tried to rip apart the door to a a padded cell he had been placed in after misbehaving in a jail cell.

The witness said the car seat appeared to get caught on a wall divider next to the bar, jostling the seat.

Because the baby was not strapped into the seat at the time, he fell to the ground, Shawinsky said.

 

Bond lowered for Towne Street shooter

Geneus’ criminal record shows convictions for interfering with police, violation of probation, breach of peace, marijuana possession, criminal trespass and failure to appear in court.

According to the court’s bail commissioner.

Police say Geneus, who is charged with criminal possession of a firearm, unlawful discharge, reckless endangerment and carrying a pistol without a permit, had just exited the party when another man across the street began firing at a 32-year-old Norwalk man standing next to Geneus.

 

Police rescue woodpecker

STAMFORD — Stamford police rescued what turned out to be a northern flicker woodpecker last week after a Unity Road resident reported hearing noises in their basement. The medium-size bird, native to most of North America, was captured and released by officers Chris Brown (pictured) and Bob Somody.

 

Stamford’s 9th District has new rep

STAMFORD — Linda Costis is the newest member of the Board of Representatives.

Costis, sworn in at the Feb. 6 board meeting, replaces Valerie McNeil in the 9th District. A move from the district forced McNeil, a Democrat, to resign her seat.

Costis, also a Democrat, will serve until the November municipal election, at which point she will need to run to keep her seat.

She represents the 9th District alongside Democrat Rodney Pratt.

 

Stamford Public Safety Academy holds graduation

The program covered community policing and firefighting techniques, and included field trips to public safety departments, ride-alongs, police dog and bomb squad demonstrations, and a presentation on drug trends.

 

Report: Suspects’ rights may have been ignored in Comunale case

Police believe Comunale, a 2008 Westhill High School graduate, was killed Nov. 14 after a night of drinking in Rackover’s luxury apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan.

According to the motion, Dilione punched Comunale, who was then kicked unconscious and stabbed by Rackover.

Authorities had originally charged Dilione and Rackover with second-degree murder, but the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office dropped the murder charges as detectives continue to investigate.

 

Crews extinguish nighttime Stamford fire

STAMFORD - Crews quickly extinguished a nighttime fire that started Saturday in the basement of an apartment.

The Woodside Fire Station, along with police and EMS, responded to 19 Linden Place around 8:30 p.m. and put out the flames, according to a release from the Stamford Fire Department.

 

Stamford felon gets over five years in fed prison for gun possession

According to a release from Deirdre Daly, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Barnes was sentenced to 63 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Alvin Thompson in Hartford Friday.

[...] of his arrest, Barnes, whose criminal record includes 10 criminal convictions — including being a felon in possession of a firearm, and felony convictions for second degree assault— was on probation from a pistol-whipping incident on the city’s West Side in March 2012, police said.
