STAMFORD — The final public debate among mayoral candidates will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at UConn-Stamford’s downtown campus. Democratic incumbent Mayor David Martin, Republican challenger Barry Michelson and unaffiliated candidate John Zito will answer questions posed by the League of Women Voters of Stamford, the Stamford Advocate and the audience. The debate, which will wrap up at 8:30 p.m., will take place in UConn’s GenRe Auditorium.

STAMFORD — Two Norwalk brothers have been accused of beating a man with a baseball bat and tire iron in the Cove.

Lt. Tom Barcello said the assault occurred on Sept 10 when officers found the victim bleeding from the head and mouth on Cove Road near Frederick Street. Barcello said the victim told officers he knew the two men who beat him.

Investigators identified the brothers as Milton, 28, and Gerson Morales, 27, who both live on Ely Avenue in Norwalk. They were each charged with second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit second degree assault.

STAMFORD — Old and unwanted medicine may be disposed of Saturday at the police department.

The drop-off is a free, anonymous and environmentally safe way to dispose of prescription medicine. It’s being held at 805 Bedford St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Liquids and needles will not be accepted.

STAMFORD - A man being held in jail for allegedly sexually assaulting his niece, was arrested again and charged with the rape of his second niece in Stamford.

HARTFORD - A commuter railroad from New Haven to Springfield, Massachusetts is set to open next year — the first new rail line in Connecticut in decades.

A proposed rate schedule released this week for the CTrail Hartford line shows a one-way trip from New Haven to Springfield will cost $12.75, and $8 from New Haven to Hartford.

When Hartford Line service begins in 2018, CTrail and Amtrak will offer 17 week day round trips beginning in 2018, with 12 continuing on to Springfield. The proposed rates apply only to the state owned CTrail trains.

STAMFORD-A city man was punched and robbed of his wallet on a South End street corner early Monday morning.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said the man was walking home early Monday after doing some drinking at the Peruvian Club on Atlantic Street. Less than a block away when he came up to Henry Street, two tall men walked up to him and punched him in the face and took his wallet containing $200.

The man was sent to Stamford Hospital for treatment and police were called when the man said he had been mugged.

STAMFORD-A New York City man was picked up at the Stamford Town Center mall allegedly trying to pass 20 counterfeit bills on Sunday, police said.

Capt. Richard Conklin said police were called to the Zara clothing store on the fifth level of the mall at about 5 p.m. on the report of a man who had just passed 13 counterfeit $20 bills and picked up two blazers. Store employees told police that a man fitting the description recently passed some counterfeit bills at their sister store in Greenwich.

STAMFORD-Before jury selection in the case of a man charged with nearly cutting off the hand of a suitor to his ex-girlfriend commences Tuesday, motions to throw out evidence from from the state and defendant will be heard at the Stamford courthouse today.

On June 26, 2015 Cesar Oliverio, 37, allegedly entered his former girlfriend’s apartment and laid in wait for her to return from what he suspected was a date, police said. When the former girlfriend and another man arrived late at night back at her apartment on Camp Avenue in Springdale, he attacked the man, his arrest affidavit says.

BETHEL—A stretch of Shelter Rock Road will be closed to all traffic except local traffic for a week, starting Monday, town officials announced last week.

The section of the road between Walnut Hill Road and Payne Road will be closed each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 31, the town said.

Residents and school buses will be allowed on the road during the closures.

The closure will allow workers to install storm drains, according to a town Facebook post. A paving schedule will be announced following the drainage work completion.

TRUMBULL — One person was sent to the hospital after an accident caused by a motorist traveling the wrong direction on the Merritt Parkway, police said.

Connecticut State Police Troop G responded to a two-car accident that resulted in a rollover on the northbound portion of the parkway between Exits 47 and 48 around 8:37 p.m. Friday night.

Police determined that the accident resulted from a driver entering the wrong way on the highway and driving head-on into northbound traffic.
