WALLED LAKESummer program offers free meals to childrenWalled Lake Consolidated Schools will participate in the Summer Food Service Program beginning Monday, June 18. This program provides meals to children ages 1-18 without charge. Young adults from age 19 to 26 are also eligible if they're enrolled in programs for the mentally or physically disabled that are recognized by a state or local public agency.

The message of neighbors serving neighbors was harkened at the 33rd Annual Clarkston Community Awards breakfast. Residents who contributed their time and talents to improving education, business, beautification and collaboration in Clarkston were honored.Citizen of the Year Maggie Razdar created Kids Standard Magazine initially for Clarkston students to publish their writing in a "real magazine.

 

Two Farmington Public Schools employees receive Oakland County education awards

Two Farmington Public Schools employees were recently recognized with Oakland County education awards.Ashely Hardwick was awarded the Oakland County Community and Adult Educators Support Award. Teresa Barrick was awarded the Oakland County Support Person of the Year for the Southwest Quadrant of Oakland County.

 

Vietnam veterans honored at 50-year anniversary of war in Holly Township

Michigan Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall is sponsoring a formal Vietnam veteran lapel pinning ceremony in commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the war at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Great Lakes National Cemetery, at 4200 Belford Road, Holly Township. Kowall, R-White Lake, and the Holly Area Veterans Resource Center are hosting the "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Event to Thank and Honor Vietnam Veterans and Their Families" to give long overdue recognition to Vietnam War era veterans and their families.

 

Stanford and Harvard universities award scholarship to Waterford Mott senior

Waterford Mott High School senior Marco Guerra Gonzalez was awarded a full-ride scholarship to Stanford University. Keith Wunderlich, Waterford School District Superintendent, said Gonzalez had full-ride scholarships to Harvard and Swarthmore as well, but picked Stanford. "Way to go!" said Wunderlich.

 

Two local high school juniors earn perfect score on ACT

Two Oakland County students - Anushka Jain, a junior at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, and Christopher VanDieren, a junior at Notre Dame Preparatory in Pontiac - earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36.On average, only one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn the top score.

 

Pontiac-Waterford Elks host annual Classic Car Show

Local synchronized swimmers to compete in national junior Olympics

Eleven local synchronized swimmers will compete at the 2018 National Synchronized Swimming Junior Olympic Championships to be held in Oxford, Ohio from June 23-27.These swimmers represent the team Troy Synchro Sharkettes, which practices at Athens High School in Troy and the Jack E. Kirksey Recreation Center in Livonia.

 

Lawrence Tech named world champion of autonomous vehicles

For the second straight year, Lawrence Technological University in Southfield is the world champion of autonomous vehicles.Lawrence Tech won the Self-Drive Challenge competition at the 26th Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, held June 1-4 at Oakland University.The win included a $3,000 prize and plaque.

 

Farmington student needs public's vote to win $100K

Warner Middle School sixth grader Faith Moore has the opportunity to win $100,000. The Farmington student is a finalist in the Paradigm Challenge - an annual competition that invites students aged four to 18 around the world to usekindness, creativity and collaboration to help solve real-life problems and make a difference.
