The Detroit Zoo recently released more than 11,000 tadpoles into a Puerto Rican pond, in an effort to restore an endangered toad's population there.The Puerto Rican crested tadpoles were born in captivity and released 24 hours after they left the zoo into a forest pond.There, they will be monitored to determine if the toads are thriving and breeding.

First Michigan West Nile virus activity reported for 2018

The first West Nile virus activity for the state was recently confirmed in mosquitoes collected in Saginaw County in late May. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, 40 Michigan residents were diagnosed with West Nile virus last year with one death reported. Nationally, there were 2,002 human cases of the virus and 121 deaths reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Royal Oak's Normandy Oaks park construction to start before fall

Construction of a 40-acre park at the former Normandy Oaks golf course is set to start late this summer with the city seeking bids for the work as early as next week.Jeff Huhta of Nowak & Fraus Engineers, the main contractor for the project, and subcontractor Bob Ford of Landscape Architects gave city officials an update on the project this week now that 90 percent of the design plans are complete.

 

Judge declines to appoint guardian for frozen embryos

An Oakland County judge has declined to appoint a guardian for frozen embryos while she determines whether she can intervene in a dispute over their control.Gloria Kato Karungi of Farmington Hills wants custody over as many as 10 frozen embryos created in late 2015 with her former partner, Ronaldlee Ejalu of Novi.

 

Detroit Zoo takes in two rescued sandhill cranes, opposes hunting of the birds

Two male sandhill cranes have been taken in at the Detroit Zoo after they were rescued and rehabilitated."The sandhill cranes' story is particularly compelling because these two boys represent an iconic, native Michigan species, and they are rehabilitated, non-releasable birds that have found a great home at the Detroit Zoo," said the zoo's Chief Life Sciences Officer Scott Carter in a statement.

 

Investigation continues into murder of Emilio Valdez of Pontiac, tips coming in

Nearly one week after the body of a 20-year-old Pontiac man was pulled from the city's Osmun Lake, investigators are looking into several tips while continuing to ask the public to share any information that might help solve the case.Emilio Valdez was shot multiple times before his body was dumped in the lake, located adjacent to Stanley Park.

 

Four cases of salmonella reported in Oakland County

Oakland County has had four cases of salmonella reported as part of a recent recall of pre-cut melon. According to the Oakland County Health Division, each person who fell ill has fully recovered. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 60 people across five states were infected with Salmonella Adelaide linked to consumption of cut melon.
