BRIDGEWATER - Police and first responders are on the scene of a motorcycle accident on Route 67 Saturday morning.

Police have closed Route 67 near the accident scene.

New Fairfield reopens town beach

New Fairfield reopened its town beach on Candlewood Lake Sunday morning.

The beach was closed on Thursday when officials discovered a bloom of blue-green algae, which can can emit toxins that are harmful to people and pets, especially if ingested.

Tests results on Saturday showed this bloom’s toxin levels were well below state guidelines.

Officials still advise people to avoid the areas were the blooms are located.

Also known as cyanobacteria, blue-green algae occurs naturally in lakes and ponds throughout Connecticut.

 

New mothers turn to milk bank

DANBURY - When Julie’s daughter was born in February, she knew the baby would need more breast milk than she could provide.

[...] when she learned that her baby, who has cystic fibrosis, was intolerant of all formulas, her real difficulties began.

[...] Julie reached out for help from the Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast, a Massachusetts- based nonprofit that collects breast milk from mothers who produce more than their babies consume and distributes it to mothers who can’t fulfill their babies’ needs.

State budget cuts mean no lifeguards at Squantz Pond two days a week

NEW FAIRFIELD — The beach at Squantz Pond State Park will be left unguarded at least two days a week, owing to state budget cuts.

After its budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 was reduced by $10 million, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced $1.8 million in spending cuts at many of the state’s campgrounds, beaches, museums and nature centers.

“Our plan is designed to reduce expenses while providing the highest quality outdoor recreation opportunities for the public and ensuring public safety,” said DEEP Commissioner Robert Klee in a statement.

Danbury police make drug arrest at downtown housing complex

DANBURY — Detectives with the police department’s special investigations division charged two local men this week with selling cocaine in a downtown affordable housing complex.

Detectives who set up a surveillance of the area discovered activity consistent with drug trafficking and were able to get court authorized search and seizure warrants issued on Wednesday for the arrest of Waner Nunez, 29, and Edwin Castillo, 45.

 

Car falls into Danbury building

DANBURY — Crews with the city’s fire department had to call in a heavy wrecker this morning to pull a car out of a medical building on Sandpit Road.

According to the fire department, the unidentified driver of the vehice received only minor injuries after she drove into a large pit adjoining a medical building. Fire crews had to assist the woman out of the car through a window in the building.

The accident occured around 8 a.m. Friday.

 

Danbury police charge man with child porn possession

DANBURY — An Oklahoma man was charged by police on Thursday with posession of child pornography. According to police reports, Gerardo Vazquez-Gonzalez, of Tulsa, 19, was charged by police with third degree possession of child pornography. More information was not immediatley available early Friday. Check back for more information this afternoon.

 

Danbury family homeless after fire

According to a statement from the city’s fire department, the fire broke out around 11:20 p.m. in a three-story wooden framed apartment building on Bells Lane.

Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the flames, limiting damage from the flames to the kitchen area of the apartment.

 

Man arrested in New Milford on weapons charge

NEW MILFORD — A man accussed of unlawfully discharging a firearm was arrested on a warrant by police.

Daneile Dion, 47, of Noak, was arrrested recently on a warrant with several charges including unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and willfully engaging in a practice without the proper license, according to police reports.

Dion was released on a $5,000 bond after his appearance on the charges in Bantam Superior Court this week where his case was referred to the court’s family relations officer. Dion is expected to appear again in court on Aug. 4
