New Fairfield reopened its town beach on Candlewood Lake Sunday morning. The beach was closed on Thursday when officials discovered a bloom of blue-green algae, which can can emit toxins that are harmful to people and pets, especially if ingested. Tests results on Saturday showed this bloom’s toxin levels were well below state guidelines. Officials still advise people to avoid the areas were the blooms are located. Also known as cyanobacteria, blue-green algae occurs naturally in lakes and ponds throughout Connecticut.
