95th birthday: Ruth Diehl

LIMA — Ruth Mae Diehl is celebrating her 95th birthday. A card shower would be appreciated, care of Lutheran Village, 330 S. Davis Road, Ashland OH 44805.
She was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Ottawa, to John and Chloe Hazleton. On Oct. 19, 1939, she married Rhoades “Dusty” Diehl, who died in September 2012.
She has a daughter, Patricia (Garry) Locke, of Lima. She has three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

 

90th birthday: Margaret Frazee

LIMA — Margaret Frazee is celebrating her 90th birthday. A card shower would be appreciated, care of Sarah Jane Living Center, 328 W. Second St., Delphos OH 45833.
She was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Lima, to Aloysius and Clelah Garee Volbert. On June 14, 1948, she married Allen.
She has four children, Tom (Jackie) Frazee, of Cincinnati, Judy Brenek, of Lima, Stan (Connie) Frazee, of New Bremen, and Nancy (Dennis) Fricke, of Elida. She has 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

 

90th birthday: Nolan Sherrick

ELIDA — Nolan “Bud” Sherrick is celebrating his 90th birthday.
He was born Aug. 18, 1927, to Noah and Hulda Sherrick. He married Martha R.
He has three children, Dave (Chery) Sherrick, of Elida, Amy Sherrick, of Fresno, California, and Nancy (Rick) Hale, of Harrod.
He is affiliated with Immanuel United Methodist Church, Elida, Boy Scouts, 4-H, Sherrick Television Service and Hollow Log Gift Shop. He enjoys painting and gardening.

 

There’s a new kid in town

Tragically, one of the four-legged loves of my life died unexpectedly just before Thanksgiving last year. Jobey was another in a long line of kittens that came home from farm calls in my husband’s coveralls. This fun and funny, affectionate black and white cat quickly stole our hearts with his very dog-like behavior. He blended well with the Border Collies and grew up with Welsh Corgi, Betsy Louise, still a puppy herself at the time.

 

Real Life Mama: Back to school

Sand. Sand everywhere. I will not miss the sand all over my bathroom and in the bathtub. I will not miss putting the girls in the bath and rinsing them then draining it and rebathing them. And mosquitoes — I certainly won’t miss those dime-sized red bumps that pop up on my babies (and myself) if we happen to stay out just a bit too late.

Mary and Harold Weaver

LIMA — Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weaver are celebrating 70 years of marriage with an open house from 2-3:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Lima First Assembly Church, 1660 Findlay Road, Lima. Please omit gifts.
Weaver and the former Mary Bridges were married Aug. 28, 1947.
They are the parents of seven children, Marvin (Sandra), of Lima, Larry, of Powell, Philip (Barbara), of Bowling Green, Linda Dugan, of Lima, Paul, of Ada, Kevin (Deborah), of Elida, and Rick (Nancy), of Wethersfield, Connecticut. They have 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

President Trump has talked about the United States regaining its stature as a leader in world affairs. Sometimes, being a leader means thinking things through before talking and considering the ramifications of your words.

 

Cincinnati State drops all sports except soccer after cuts

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati State Technical and Community College says it’s suspending all sports except women’s and men’s soccer due to budget cuts.
The soccer teams will play for the fall season, but the basketball, volleyball and golf teams will not. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/2wNHr7F) the college says the suspension of most sports is only temporary.

 

School buses to get wireless internet for lengthy commutes

TOLEDO (AP) — Ohio students with lengthy commutes will be able to access Wi-Fi on new technologically advanced buses in a pilot program.
Ten yellow buses for Toledo Public Schools are now outfitted with wireless capabilities. The Blade reports (http://bit.ly/2uMCT4d) the program aims to give students a way to complete assignments and homework both on the way to school and on the way home.
