Kluber leaves start early as Indians romp past Royals, 10-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The party that started when the Indians arrived at Kauffman Stadium ground to a halt when Corey Kluber winced while covering first base in the sixth inning against Kansas City on Friday night.
It turned out to be merely a blip in the soundtrack.
Kluber escaped with a minor sprain of his right ankle, an injury that manager Terry Francona hoped will not cause him to miss a start. And considering the offense that the Indians piled up in a 10-1 rout of the Royals, just about anybody could have been on the mound and been successful.

Pliskova sweeps into semifinals at Western & Southern Open

MASON — Defending champion Karolina Pliskova made it a doubleheader sweep Friday at the Western & Southern Open, reaching the semifinals by winning a pair of matches with little rest in-between.
First, the top seed had to finish a match that was suspended because of rain the previous night. She completed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory over qualifier Camila Giorgi. After a quick turnaround, she needed only 67 minutes to beat a rested Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 for a sweep into the semis.

Trump ousts Bannon, his influential, divisive strategist

WASHINGTON (AP) — Steve Bannon, the blunt-spoken and divisive strategist who rose from Donald Trump’s conservative campaign to a top White House post, was pushed out by the president Friday, capping a turbulent seven months marked by the departure of much of Trump’s original senior staff.

Special eclipse glasses selling out quickly

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Eclipse mania is building and so is demand for the glasses that make it safe to view the first total solar eclipse to cross the U.S. in 99 years.
Lines are forming, prices are rising and shelves are emptying as people scurry to obtain special eyewear to view the sun Monday as it is obscured by the passing moon. Complicating the rising demand from last-minute shoppers was a recent recall by Amazon that forced libraries and health centers around the country to recall glasses they gave away or sold.

Allen County a potential test site for welfare reform initiative

LIMA — While social safety net programs like welfare and food stamps were intended to provide assistance to the unemployed to help them get back on their feet, the current system can arbitrarily cut off those benefits from recipients once they attain a certain wage level, leaving them in a worse financial situation and disincentivizing promotions and raises in the workplace.

Allen County Fair full of memories

LIMA — The bands played Friday. The rides spun with excited motion. The food begged visitors to stop for a bite.
The Allen County Fair was back in action as it began its 167th go-round Friday night.
And like she has for the past 50 years, Shirley Haller was there.
“I just love the Allen County Fair,” said Haller, who worked in the treasurer’s office for much of the fair but pitched in on almost every other job at some point, including once as fair manager temporarily. “I have my whole life.”

Bath falls in girls soccer opener

BATH TOWNSHIP — Liberty-Benton had plenty of breakaway speed.
And the Eagles spent most of the night taking advantage of it.
Liberty-Benton junior Savanah Richards scored three goals to lead Liberty-Benton to a 5-0 girls soccer victory over Bath on soccer’s opening night Friday at Bath.
Liberty-Benton was in control the whole way, as it led 4-0 at halftime.
“We’ve added speed this year so that’s (getting breakaways) one of our big keys this season,” Richards said.
