N.H. police seek thief with needle

Police are searching for a man who robbed a tanning salon with a hypodermic needle and fled the scene on foot Friday night in New Hampshire.Salem police said the man entered Modern Tan on Main Street at approximately 7:30 p.m., demanding money.After a brief altercation with an employee, the suspect pushed the employee several times and was able to gain access to the cash register and obtain an unknown amount of money, police said.

 

Nobel Peace Prize winner to speak about nonviolent activism

LOWELL, Mass. — The first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize will be in Massachusetts to talk about nonviolent activism.Tawakkol Karman is visiting UMass Lowell on Tuesday for the school's Day Without Violence event commemorating the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s death.Karman is a journalist and human rights activist known for supporting women's rights in her home country of Yemen.She shared the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize with Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and the first female president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

 

Firefighter arrested after crashing into cop car and fleeing

BOSTON — A firefighter has been arrested for allegedly crashing into a police vehicle and fleeing the scene just one day before retiring.The Boston Globe reports 64-year-old Sean Ingram, of Quincy, was belligerent during his arrest Thursday night.Police say the longtime Boston firefighter allegedly left the scene of a crash on Interstate 93 and expressed his disdain for state troopers during his arrest, calling them "Nazis."

FOSTER, R.I. — A Rhode Island nudist campground is looking for a lifeguard, and the uniform is cheap: nothing.The Providence Journal reports Dyer Woods Nudist Campgrounds' help wanted notice for a lifeguard this summer says qualified candidates must have "excellent communication skills" and the ability to "work as part of a team."Campground president Jim Johnson says the lifeguard can wear a swimsuit but it's not necessary.The campground offers swimming, hiking, volleyball and a sauna for people who aren't afraid to bare it all.

WORCESTER, Mass. — A beloved gastro pub is closing the day after its manager pleaded guilty for lying to federal investigators.The Worcester Telegram reports Hangover Pub & Broth restaurant manager Christopher Slavinskas pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court for lying to investigators about a money laundering case.His restaurant shuttered the next day.

 

Massachusetts prison cited for nearly 600 health violations

SHIRLEY, Mass. — State public health regulators say they found nearly 600 health code violations, including dirty or broken toilets, improperly stored food and sinks with discolored or scalding hot water, during an annual inspection at one of the state's maximum security prisons.The Sentinel & Enterprise reports that the Department of Public Health says more than half of the citations at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley were for repeat violations.The department gave the prison 10 days to come up with a plan to fix the issues.

 

Judge allows ex-altar boys' suit against bishop to proceed

FALL RIVER, Mass. — A judge has ruled that a lawsuit against a former Roman Catholic bishop in Massachusetts who allegedly failed to properly supervise a priest accused of molesting two altar boys can move forward.The Standard-Times reports that a judge this month ruled a jury should decide the case involving former Diocese of Fall River Bishop Daniel Cronin.The plaintiffs say they were abused by a now-deceased priest in the 1970s and 1980s while he served at St. Anthony's Church in Falmouth.

 

Man gets 5 years in prison for human trafficking conviction

BROCKTON, Mass. — A Massachusetts man convicted of human trafficking has been sentenced to more than five years in state prison.The Brockton Enterprise reports that 26-year-old Shakwaan Simpkins was sentenced Thursday, two days after jurors found him guilty of one count of trafficking a person for sexual servitude.Prosecutors say in 2015, Simpkins, of Brockton, was arrested in an undercover sting operation targeting human traffickers after he attempted to recruit an undercover police officer to work for him as a prostitute.

 

Effort underway to extend Lafayette Trail in Massachusetts

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A legislative effort is underway to extend the Marquis de Lafayette Trail in Massachusetts through Berkshire County.The Berkshire Eagle reports that Democratic state Sen. Adam Hinds, of Pittsfield, recently secured Senate approval of a measure to extend the trail, which is currently 25 miles long and runs from Hinsdale to Williamsburg.If the legislation is approved, the state would put up signs marking the trail's extension another 20 miles from the New York border, through Hancock, Pittsfield and Dalton to Hinsdale.

 

Lane closures coming to Sagamore Bridge starting Monday

BOURNE, Mass. — It's not yet summer, but motorists are already being warned about possible traffic headaches on Cape Cod.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the Sagamore Bridge to one lane in each direction for repairs starting Monday. The bridge that opened in 1935 carries Route 6 across the Cape Cod Canal.
