Study: Proposal to boost school aid would be modest increase

BOSTON — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker's proposal to boost aid to local education would have a modest impact by increasing aid by about 2 percent overall.The Boston Globe reports that approximately 60 percent of school systems would receive an increase of less than 1 percent in general education aid, while two school systems — Holyoke and Southbridge — would only see aid increase by 0.2 percent. State data trends indicate that school spending has increased by a rate of 4 percent annually.

 

1 person dead after early morning crash in Ludlow

LUDLOW, Mass. — Police say one person has died in a pre-dawn car crash in Massachusetts.Ludlow police a car went off Route 21 in town at about 2 a.m. Monday.The driver, the vehicle's only occupant, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.The victim's identity was not immediately made public pending notification of family.No other vehicles were involved.The cause remains under investigation.

What's being described as "a series of reforms to policies and procedures" at the scandal-plagued state police will be announced today by Gov. Charlie Baker at the State House.Baker is expected to be joined at the 1 p.m. press conference by state police Col. Kerry Gilpin, Secretary of Public Safety and Security Daniel Bennett and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito.Baker's office said the event is to announce "a series of reforms to policies and procedures at the Massachusetts State Police."

Charlie Baker and the head of the state police plan to announce changes in "policies and procedures" after the agency was rocked by an overtime scandal and other recent disclosures.The governor's office says Baker will join Col. Kerry Gilpin and other officials for the announcement at a Statehouse news conference on Monday. It was not immediately known what reforms would be in store for the department.

 

Judge sides with city in discrimination, civil rights suit

LOWELL — A judge has ruled against a former library assistant who sued a Massachusetts city claiming civil rights violations, discrimination and retaliation.The Sun reports that Diane Cloutier sued the city of Lowell in 2015 seeking more than $500,000 in damages. She now has to pay more than $2,000 in legal costs.Cloutier was dismissed from the Pollard Memorial Library in 2013 due to a doctor's note saying she could not lift or grasp items with her right hand.

 

Washington state traffic official to talk spike in impaired driving accidents

A traffic safety official from Washington state is delivering a sober talk on the dangers of stoned drivers and weed-fueled fatal crashes as Massachusetts takes the next step toward recreational pot sales today.“This isn’t a joke or a game. It’s very serious,” said Darrin Grondel, director of the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission on a spike in deaths from drug-impaired drivers in his state.

 

Custodian arrested after holes found in girls' bathroom

NORTHAMPTON — Police say a custodian at a Massachusetts high school has been arrested after what were described as "unusual structural modifications" were found in a girls' bathroom.Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper says 22-year-old Michael Kremensky was arrested late last week on four counts of photographing an unsuspecting nude person. Kremensky, who has worked at Northampton High School since August, was previously placed on leave.

 

Police: Man stole truck, led officers on chase

QUINCY  — Police in Massachusetts are searching for a man who they say led officers on a chase in a stolen truck before fleeing on foot.WCVB-TV reports the Millennium Maintenance & Power Sweeping truck was stolen outside of a Quincy restaurant on Sunday. Officials say an employee was picking up some trash in the parking lot when the suspect stole the vehicle.Police tracked the truck by using a company GPS system. It was later recovered in Medford.No arrests have been made.
