King's assassination eve speech to be read in Boston

BOSTON — Martin Luther King Jr.'s last speech before his assassination 50 years ago this week will be read out aloud in Boston.Dozens of speakers aged 5 to 91 will take turns reading short passages from the speech at Monday afternoon's remembrance on City Hall Plaza.King originally delivered it in Memphis, Tennessee, on the eve of his April 4, 1968, death.

 

‘Special’ carousel begins latest whirl

Kids came in droves to giddy-up at the Paragon Carousel that celebrated its 90th season going round and round to the notes of its Wurlitzer organ this weekend.Jim Callahan, director of operations for the carousel, said the carousel at Paragon Park in Hull was a popular feature during one of its best opening weekends.

 

Teen killed, passenger injured in I-495 rollover

A Methuen teen was killed Saturday night and her passenger seriously injured when the 2004 Lincoln LS state police said Alexis Spartz was driving northbound on Interstate 495 in Haverhill rolled over and crashed.Police said an off-duty Methuen firefighter, two off-duty troopers and Haverhill firefighters pitched in to free Spartz, 18, and her 19-year-old passenger from the mangled wreck and render first aid.The crash occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle came to rest on its roof next to a guard rail.

Cops on the hunt for street sweeper joyrider 

State police were looking for a bandit they say stole a commercial street sweeper earlier today and even drove it at a trooper's cruiser, causing the officer to swerve out of the way.The incident began shortly before noon when Quincy police broadcast an alert for a “stolen F350 street sweeper heading north on Route 93,” police said in a released statement.

 

State police identify teenage victim of car crash

HAVERHILL, Mass. — State police have identified a person involved in a deadly highway crash.Officials say Methuen teen Alexis Spartz was killed in a single-car crash on Interstate 495 Saturday evening in Haverhill.Eighteen-year-old Spartz was driving a 2004 Lincoln LS when she crashed, rolling over the car.Local firefighters freed Spartz and her passenger from the car shortly after 6 p.m.

US Commerce Secretary buys home in Berkshires

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — A Trump administration cabinet member will be spending some time in the Berkshires.The Berkshire Eagle reports Commerce Secretary Wilbur L. Ross Jr. has purchased a Revolutionary War era home on 18 acres in the western Massachusetts town of Great Barrington.The property on Seekonk Cross Road was sold for $3.2 million, according to deed records. Built in 1780, the two-story single-family home has five bedrooms, a greenhouse and a pool.
