Judge says abused former altar boys can sue bishop

Former altar boys who claim they were molested by a priest years ago are allowed to sue the bishop they say failed in supervising him, according to a recent court ruling.Paul Andrews and Daniel Sherwood are suing the Rev. Daniel Cronin, the former bishop of the Fall River Archdiocese. They argue that he was negligent in supervising and retaining the services of Maurice Souza — a now-deceased priest who they say sexually molested them when they would go on out-of-state trips in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

 

DA: Body found off highway identified as missing Marine recruit

The remains found off Interstate 95 yesterday in Canton have been "positively identified" as missing U.S. Marine recruit Joseph Brancato, the Norfolk DA's office confirmed today.Nicole DaSilva, Brancato's cousin, said a Boston police detective called the family this afternoon to tell them the sad news. "My baby, to be on a side of a road for all that time, kills me," Brancato's mother, Kim, cried out this afternoon outisde her Winthrop home.

Police dispatcher under investigation for social media posts

BROCKTON  — A Massachusetts State Police dispatcher who's been accused of making insensitive comments online has been suspended without pay.The Brockton Enterprise reports that 53-year-old Carla Grant was moved to unpaid administrative leave Wednesday following a hearing with internal affairs. Grant was placed on paid leave after officials learned she made comments on Facebook that speculated about evidence in an ongoing police investigation into a fatal crash in Avon in February.

BOSTON — The mystery of the unknown justice has been solved.The man whose portrait has hung for years outside the chamber of the highest court in Massachusetts without anyone actually knowing who he was now has a name: Lemuel Shaw, who served as chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court from 1830 until 1860.In February, current Chief Justice Ralph Gants sought the public's help in identifying the man and received more than 40 educated guesses.

 

Man facing 15th drunken driving case rejects plea deal

SALEM  — The lawyer for a Massachusetts man facing his 15th drunken driving charge says his client has rejected a judge's proposed six-year prison sentence in the latest case and now wants a trial.The Salem News reports that a judge last month agreed with prosecutors that 56-year-old Peter Anketell should serve the maximum.But on Wednesday, Anketell's lawyer, Patrick Regan, said his client had decided not to plead guilty and instead proceed to trial.

 

Explosive device found at Massachusetts business

DEERFIELD — Police have arrested a Massachusetts man after finding what they describe as a bomb at his workplace.Authorities say the state police bomb squad responded to Trew Stone Inc., a stone products supplier in Deerfield, just after 8 a.m. Wednesday.Deerfield police say "arriving officers were able to confirm that the device appeared to be homemade, and resembled a pipe bomb."The business was evacuated and the explosive device was deactivated.
