BOSTON — A jury has awarded a Massachusetts police officer more than $2 million after finding she was subjected to sexual discrimination at work.The Suffolk Superior Court jury last week awarded veteran Winthrop Officer Judy Racow $676,000 in emotional damages and $1,352,000 in punitive damages.

 

UMass giving $200,000 in new scholarship to veterans

BOSTON — Paying for higher education may get a little easier for some veterans.University of Massachusetts Boston is ordering $200,000 in scholarship funding for the group.The funds will be allocated next academic year and will provide aid to pre-9/11 veterans, and performance-based aid.Interim Chancellor Barry Mills says this move is a "number one priority," and that UMass has a long tradition of welcome veterans.

Uber driver up next in assault case vs. cop

An Uber driver allegedly attacked by an off-duty Boston cop is set to testify today about the melee in Southie that ended with the officer taking off with his Prius.Luis Blanco, who police say was assaulted by off-duty cop Michael C. Doherty while driving him home after a late night on the town, is expected to take the stand this morning in Suffolk Superior Court. Another Uber driver, Guilliano Verna, who came to Blanco’s aid after Doherty drove off with Blanco’s car, is also expected to testify.

Superintendents call for school security measures

The Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents is calling for a system that would help it determine whether school buildings are safe, a heightened focus on school resource officers and funding aimed at providing students with increased mental health support.“I think it’ll be helpful for us to have a statewide resource in terms of technology,” MASS Executive Director Tom Scott said. “We’d love to have a central depository.”

 

Second suspect in Gronk home robbery surrenders

The second of three suspects wanted for breaking into the home of New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski surrendered to authorities yesterday, police said.Eric Tyrrell, 28, of Foxboro, was held last night by Foxboro police on $10,000 cash bail.Tyrrell is expected to be arraigned today in Wrentham District Court for two counts of receiving stolen property over $250.Gronkowski was at the Super Bowl on Feb. 5 when men broke into his home and took guns, electronics and other valuables, police said.
