New Haven man charged in check cashing scheme targeting Stamford company

Financial crimes investigator Michael Stempien said the arrest of 41-year-old Pablo Marcano stems from a January complaint regarding checks being counterfeited that appeared to belong to the marble company.

When police looked at the documents used in the transactions, Stempien said that each of those who cashed the checks used their real name and presented their identification.

 

Juvenile found in Stamford carrying loaded pistol

The youth was charged with possession of a firearm without a permit and illegally altering the identification number on a firearm and transported to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center, Conklin said.

“This was a nice, proactive arrest from NOC officers removing an illegal, loaded firearm from the street,” said Conklin.

Conklin said the pistol will be sent to the state laboratory for ballistics tests, to see if it has been used in any other crimes.

 

Man charged with walking away from Stamford crash

STAMFORD-A city man turned himself over to police and was charged with walking away after crashing his pickup truck into a Cove Road utility pole last October.

When police arrived they found a black pickup truck with heavy damage that collided with a utility pole, but no driver.

 

Driver killed in Woodbury crash

WOODBURY - A New York man was killed Tuesday afternoon during a head on collision on Goodhill Road.

Police said James Hinican, of Grahamsville, NY, was killed after his car, a Honda Civic crossed over the double yellow line at around 2:20 p.m. and into an oncoming vehicle. Hinican was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of dthe other vehicle was sent to Waterbury Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Candidate announces bid for Stamford Board of Reps

STAMFORD — A teacher and recent college graduate says he will seek the Democratic nod to run for the Board of Representatives in the 18th District.

Stamford requires representatives that will renew trust in our community, restore the integrity of our schools, and rebuild our infrastructure to meet the needs of our citizens, Woodside said in a news release.

According to Woodside, Democrats have not nominated a candidate to run in the 18th District since 2005.

 

Washington Boulevard closed this weekend

The southbound side of the road between Main Street and Tresser Boulevard — including the sidewalk — will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

Residents expecting to travel in the downtown area this weekend should expect to follow the detour or make alternate plans now to avoid the area, according to a city press release.

 

Stamford police launch distracted driving campaign

Gallagher held a cup of coffee to hide his police radio that he used to alert officers of distracted drivers as they passed the Broad Street intersection.

Gallagher, who has previously posed as a construction worker and surveyor, spearheaded the police department’s launch of the state Department of Transportation’s U Drive.

Eight drivers were cited for running red lights (all on Washington Boulevard) and two motorists received tickets for putting on makeup while driving.

The Stamford crackdown, which continues until April 30, is conducted in partnership with the state DOT and the Natio

 

Tractor trailer accident on I-84 snarls traffic

NEWTOWN - Traffic is backed up for more than five miles along Interstate 84 after an accident involving two tractor-trailer trucks has closed the westbound lanes of the highway.

Troopers with the State Police were allowing some motorists to get through the area through the right emergency lane, authorities said, but that lane was closed temporarily to allow the tow trucks to do their work.

 

Model Stephanie Seymour due in Stamford court Tuesday

The Greenwich woman, a former model for Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated, will be in the Stamford courthouse to find out whether the case will be dismissed. The court will likely dismiss the charges if Seymour has successfully completed alcohol abuse treatment, attended alcohol education classes and met with victims of drunken driving accidents as part of a probationary program for first offenders.
