Train station is focus of Walk to Work campaign

In Stamford, reps from the city, state Department of Transportation, Stamford Hospital and People Friendly Stamford — a bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy group — urged commuters at the Stamford Transportation Center to ditch the shuttles and taxis and to walk instead.

Travers, who became transportation chief in February, has said a major focus of his is making the city more pedestrian friendly with infrastructure and safety improvements.

A recent study also found the shuttles used by employers, hotels and apartment complexes have created a dangerous degree of congestion at the station

 

Danbury carjacking leads to police pursuit, school lockdowns

DANBURY - Police appear to have at least three suspects in custody after a car jacking at around 10 a.m. Friday in the Great Plains area of the city near the Danbury Town Park that forced two local schools into lockdown.

Preliminary police reports indicate that a car was taken by knife-point in the area and police were able to pursue the vehicle, which at one point entered the parking lot of St. Gregory School during the chase.

 

Stamford man will run Boston Marathon for children’s fund

STAMFORD — A Stamford man is running the Boston Marathon to support the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which provides medical care for children in New England and the Dominican Republic.

Years ago, Tortora’s children had their own medical issues which required specialized care that was not covered by insurance.

The money for the fund is made up in yearly contributions from every lawyer in the state including public defenders and prosecutors, like Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Maureen Ornousky, who argued the state’s position against Snaider Thursday.

CVS shampoo bandit charged with cleaning out Stamford stores

STAMFORD-Already in jail for filching an unusually valuable haul of high-end womens hair care products from a Darien pharmacy, a Bronx man who calls himself the “CVS bandit,” has been arrested and charged for stealing over $8,000 worth of high-end shampoo from stores in Stamford.

Fleeing driver forced to end chase at Stamford police headquarters

The chase began when officers in the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad went to his home to serve an arrest warrant on Dotson for two counts of sales of narcotics, a police report contained in Dotson’s file said.

Armed with a search warrant, police looked through Dotson’s car, but found only a small orange container that said, “RX for recreational use, take as needed,” containing about a gram and one-half of marijuana, the report said.

Route 7 closure in New Milford slows commute

NEW MILFORD - Much of the traffic through Route 7 was forced to detour through the downtown area and other secondary roads Thursday morning as a result of an overnight accident that closed the main commuting artery.

Police said that while there were no injuries reported as a result of the accident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a utility pole was broken in half and fell across the roadway along with a plethora of wires.

 

Planned Parenthood fundraiser sees record turnout

STAMFORD — The guest list at Planned Parenthood of Southern New England’s annual fundraiser grew this year by more than 100 people, a change its leaders attribute to the political climate.

Last year, Planned Parenthood’s Stamford center left its facility of 37 years on East Main Street for a renovated building on Sixth Street.

Besides the basic reproductive health care and cancer screenings offered at all locations, Stamford has the only Planned Parenthood in Fairfield County that offers on-site surgical abortions.

 

Southbury woman dies after head on collision

Police said Delores Hake, 86, died at Danbury Hospital from injuries she received when the car she was a passenger in, a GMC Terrain, was hit by an oncoming Buick LeSabre driven by Bridgeport resident Terrelle Anderson, 32.

While were very early in the investigation, preliminary findings, indicate that the operator, Terrelle Anderson of Bridgeport CT, crossed over the double yellow center line and collided with Forest Herron who was traveling in the opposite direction where the two vehicles collided head on, said Lt.Aaron Bahamonde, a spokesman for the police department.
