Stamford police launch distracted driving campaign

Gallagher held a cup of coffee to hide his police radio that he used to alert officers of distracted drivers as they passed the Broad Street intersection. Gallagher, who has previously posed as a construction worker and surveyor, spearheaded the police department’s launch of the state Department of Transportation’s U Drive. Eight drivers were cited for running red lights (all on Washington Boulevard) and two motorists received tickets for putting on makeup while driving. The Stamford crackdown, which continues until April 30, is conducted in partnership with the state DOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Distracted Driving Awareness month. According to the NHTSA, nearly 3,500 people were killed and about 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015.
