STAMFORD — Public hearings are being held this week for ordinances affecting longterm parking and fees for preschool summer camp.

The proposed parking ordinance would ban parking on city streets for more than 120 consecutive hours, or five days, to create turnover that officials hope will make spaces more available.

 

Stamford breaks ground on police headquarters

STAMFORD — Citizens enter the new police headquarters through a lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows, off of which will be a community room, in a building twice the size of the old station.

After searching for a new location, officials determined the best spot for the headquarters was next to the existing building at 805 Bedford St., which will be demolished and the land potentially sold once the project is done, Mayor David Martin said.

The department also uses a garage on Magee Avenue to house its vehicle fleet, and its 911 dispatch center is at City Hall on Washington Boulevard.

Judge clears way for accessory to murder trial in Leone Park slaying

STAMFORD — A Superior Court judge ruled Monday there’s enough evidence for a city man to be charged with accessory to murder even though he appears to have been sitting in the getaway car when the victim was gunned down in Leone Park in 2015.

Judge Thomas Collin issued the decision following a four-session hearing that spanned more than a month to determine if police had enough evidence to charge Deshawn Hayes, 24, in the murder of Maxine Gooden, a bystander who was shot in the abdomen.

STAMFORD-After nearly 19 years, a serial car thief known for stealing high-end luxury cars while on test drives, was returned to Stamford after police said he disappeared with a $120,000 Porsche in 1998.

Home health aide charged with larceny in Stamford

Jacqueline Villafane, 29, of Trumbull Avenue, was charged with third-degree larceny and held over the weekend on a $5,000 court appearance bond.

Two charged with drug possession in Cummings Park in Stamford

A little after 8 p.m. officers from the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad were on a routine patrol through the Shippan park when they smelled marijuana coming from a parking lot near the tennis courts.

Officers got out and checked the area and found a Maui Jim sunglasses holder on the ground next to a white Mercedes-Benz that contained a small amount of marijuana plus a few ecstasy pills and crushed ecstasy pills in separate small plastic bags, Conklin said.

 

Decision on murder charge expected in Stamford today

Democratic Committee reports wire fraud attempt in Stamford

Sgt. Simon Blanc said committee treasurer Jackie Heftman called police Wednesday to report receiving an email, purportedly from committee Chairman Josh Fedeli asking her to transfer $5,700 from the committee account.

Fedeli told Heftman to report the wire fraud attempt to police and investigators in the financial crimes unit were given copies of the email that Heftman received, Blanc said.
