UConn-Stamford treats vandalism as bias incident

A flyer stating the rules of a billiard club tournament was discovered defaced on March 9 with the letters KKK, referring to the hate group the Klu Klux Klan, according to the university.

Terrence Cheng, director of UConn-Stamford, said in the email that UConn police and the university’s Office of Community Standards were notified, and cited a Bias Response Protocol developed in 2015.

 

Cops: Stamford man threatened another with knife

STAMFORD — A Waterside man faces criminal charges after threatening another with a knife over the weekend, authorities said.

Gamez-Vasquez, 34, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree threatening, disorderly conduct and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

 

Two Stamford natives honored for St. Patrick’s Day

The two Stamford natives were recognized by the men’s and women’s divisions of the group at the Stamford Government Center Friday.

The former clerk attended Stamford public schools and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy.

Cullen, a Stamford native, was educated at St. Cecilia’s and Stamford Catholic High School before earning degrees from Boston College and Fairfield University.

 

Dessert tasting benefits Stamford homeless shelter’s young adults

STAMFORD — An upcoming fundraiser will benefit a city homeless shelter’s new program for young adults.

“This spectacular community tradition offers the chance to indulge in incredible desserts and chocolate from the area’s finest artisanal bakeries and chocolatiers,” the organization said in a news release.

Pacific House, a Stamford nonprofit that operates an emergency shelter for men, began a program last year in response to the significant number of young adults, ages 18 to 24, at the facility.

 

Bridgeport man accused of groping Stamford teen

STAMFORD — City police officers used some trickery to catch a Bridgeport man who they say exposed himself and groped a 14-year-old girl at an East Side bus stop early one morning last October. Garcia-Palacio was arrested when he arrived and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, public indecency and risk of injury. A few days after Stamford police officer and artist Michael Wagner drew a sketch of the suspect that was released to the public, a tipster led authorities to Garcia-Palacio, of Orland Street, Barcello said.

 

Loaded gun found behind abandoned South End building

Capt. Richard Conklin said police received a call about the weapon at 6:20 p.m. and immediately headed to the area, which has been the site of several shootings and drug activity in recent months.

Officers with the department’s Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad found the Colt .32-caliber pistol inside a white plastic bag that was stashed in a pile of leaves behind a boarded up building in the area of 775 Atlantic St., Conklin said.

 

Stamford cop honored for role in murder investigation

STAMFORD — Police Sgt. Sean McGowan has been recognized for his role in the investigation into the brutal murder of city resident Joseph Comunale.

McGowan recently won the Honorable Mention from the National Association of Police Organizations’ prestigious TOP COPS award, the Stamford Police Department said in a news release.

 

Stamford dental practice owner makes federal guilty plea in dentist billing scheme

STAMFORD-The owner and operator of a city dental practice who used the records of a retired dentist to bill insurance companies for more than 10 years of work that was never performed has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.

According to a release from Deirdre Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Elena Ilizarov, 44, of Stamford made the plea before Judge Victor Bolden in Bridgeport and faces as many as 20 years in jail for bilking the insurance companies of nearly $600,000.

Judges to decide if Stamford man was insane when he killed his mother

STAMFORD-A city man facing a murder charge after he brutally beat his mother into a coma from which she never awoke up in March 2015, will be facing three judges next week plead his case that he was insane when he allegedly killed his mother.

John Anderson told police that his brother became angered when his mother pointed out to Timothy that she found the psychological medications he was supposed to be taking in a kitchen garbage can of the home she shared with her troubled son on Sleepy Hollow Lane.

For a time since his arrest immediately after the assault, Anderson was found not competen

 

Budget presentation still on for Monday

STAMFORD — The impending snowstorm will not prevent Mayor David Martin from presenting his 2017-18 budget proposal to the Board of Finance at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The Board of Representatives will also meet Monday as scheduled. The board’s Steering Committee will meet at 7 p.m., followed by the Fiscal Committee at 8 p.m. Martin will give the same budget overview to both the Board of Finance and Fiscal Committee.

All meetings are on the 4th floor of the Stamford Government Center on Washington Boulevard.
