STAMFORD — Citizens enter the new police headquarters through a lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows, off of which will be a community room, in a building twice the size of the old station. After searching for a new location, officials determined the best spot for the headquarters was next to the existing building at 805 Bedford St., which will be demolished and the land potentially sold once the project is done, Mayor David Martin said. The department also uses a garage on Magee Avenue to house its vehicle fleet, and its 911 dispatch center is at City Hall on Washington Boulevard. Officials determined a new station was the best option to replace a headquarters that has for years been in violation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. All of the department’s 19 cells are worn from overuse and feature old-fashioned iron bars instead of the plexiglass used now in jails.
