Sprinkler douses kitchen fire in downtown high rise

STAMFORD — The occupants of four apartments at 66 Summer St. were displaced Sunday by a small fire that broke out in the kitchen of a sixth-floor unit of the 14-story building, according to the Stamford Fire Department.

No one was reported injured in the fire shortly after 2:30 p.m., which drew a major response from the fire department.

At 2:39 p.m. the Stamford fire department received an automatic alarm notification for the building, followed by reports of smoke on the sixth floor, according to Deputy Fire Chief Pat Tripodi.

 

Stamford man wounded in drive-by shooting

STAMFORD — A West Side man was wounded in a drive-by shooting Saturday night outside the Southwood Square housing complex, Sgt. Paul Guzda said.

The unidentified 37-year-old man was shot when a passenger of a dark blue Honda Civic fired at least three shots as he stand outside the Montauk Drive complex about 10 p.m.

 

Police: Motorcyclist seriously injured after crashing ‘reckless[ly]’ into car in Stamford

STAMFORD — A motorcyclist is seriously injured after police say he crashed into a car on Interstate-95 Southbound on Saturday afternoon.

State police say Jason Coran Gadson, 31, of Norwalk, was driving “in a reckless manner” when he hit the back of a Ford Explorer near Exit 7 on I-95. Gadson suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Stamford Hospital, according to police.

The driver and passenger in the Ford Explorer were not injured.

 

All lanes reopen on I-95 in Stamford after serious accident

STAMFORD — A serious accident on Interstate 95 closed multiple lanes for nearly an hour and a half Saturday afternoon. Connecticut State Police responded to I-95 southbound at exit 7 shortly after 3 p.m., State Trooper Kelly Grant said. The accident involved a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle, she said. The right and center lanes were closed as police investigated. The accident caused congestion between exits 13 and 6, about six miles of highway, according to the Department of Transportation.

 

Power thefts lead to arrest of Stamford man

STAMFORD — A city man has been accused of stealing electricity from his landlord and Eversource.

Edgar Martinez, 42, was charged Thursday with second-degree larceny, third-degree larceny, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief and was held in lieu of a $50,000 court appearance bond.

Property Crimes Sgt. Sean Scanlan said Martinez’s Hazel Street landlord discovered in April that someone rigged wires to tap into the complex’s electrical box to siphon power from Eversource.

Scanlan said the lines ran directly into Martinez’s apartment.

 

Rush hour traffic halts chase on I-95 in Stamford

STAMFORD-A former Stamford man led police on a short chase for up Interstate-95 before he was blocked by rush hour traffic and apprehended Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said officers William Garay and Daniel DeRocco were on routine patrol at La Quinta hotel on the city’s West Side when they spotted a man drive through the parking lot in a tan Altima.

A few minutes later after seeing the man remain in the vehicle, the officers walked up to the car and began smell marijuana.

 

Blown stop sign leads to drug charges in Stamford

STAMFORD-A stop sign violation led to a Stamford man on probation being charged with operating a drug factory after more than two ounces of marijuana was found in his car Thursday evening.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said Lt. Diedrich Hohn was working a drunk driving detail when he saw a vehicle run a stop sign at Crystal Street and Prevail Road in Glenbrook.

While walking up to the car, Hohn smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Tyquan Hayes, 22, of Courtland Circle, appeared nervous and admitted that he did not have a driver’s license.

 

Day care helps cops nab drunk driver in Stamford

Minutes later, a police officer spotted the car in front of 49 Travis Avenue and could see one of the children was not in a safety seat and pulled the vehicle over.

When he got to police headquarters he refused to take a breathalyzer test and police found that he had four active warrants out for his arrest for failing to appear in court and violating a judge’s protective order, Shawinsky said.

 

Pistol found in laundry room of Stamford apartment building

STAMFORD-A janitor found a recently stolen pistol wrapped in a T-shirt stashed behind a washing machine in the laundry room of a West Side apartment building, police said.

the janitor told police he checks the laundry room every day and had not seen the pistol before Wednesday.

 

Four fishermen rescued off Shippan Point in Stamford

Stamford Marine Unit Sgt. Robert Monck said a Saddle Rock Road resident called 911 at about 8 p.m. Wednesday to report four men in distress on Long Island Sound.

Monck said the men in the 15-foot fiberglass boat were fishing when they hit a rock and began taking on water.
