New Fairfield library asks for feedback

NEW FAIRFIELD — The library is distributing a survey to get feedback on its services and programs.

The survey can be found on the library’s page on the town website. It will gather information about both adult and children’s programs.

The Board of Selectman, Library Board and Friends of the Library will review the input, a post about the survey said.

Flood watch canceled for southwestern Connecticut

The National Weather Service has canceled a flood watch for the southern part of the state as rain is expected to end this morning.

Moderate to heavy rainfall that was orgininally expected in the area is now forecast as periods of light rain, NWS reported around 7 a.m. Temperatures are expected to stay above freezing, meaning snow will continue to melt.

But, the threat of “ice jam flooding” has diminished in the area and the official watch is canceled.

The latest rainfall totals reported by NWS Friday night show 1.36 inches in Danbury and Westport.

 

Metro-North collision shuts down Danbury Branch Line

REDDING — The Metro-North Danbury Branch was partially shut down after an unoccupied car was struck by a train late Friday night, Metro-North officials said.

The accident occurred around 11:24 p.m. just north of the Branchville station when a train hit a car abandoned on Topstone Road in Redding. There were no injuries reported in the accident, Metro-North officials said.

Due to the accident, the Danbury Branch Line north of Redding was suspended until about 2 a.m. Saturday. The line has seen resumed service and is running without delays.

 

Norwalk handyman pleads guilty to stealing from Stamford woman

STAMFORD — Two years in jail is not enough for a Norwalk handyman who pleaded guilty to stealing $2,800 worth of checks from an elderly woman, a relative said in court Friday.

Barbara Brackett told Judge Gary White during a hearing at the Stamford courthouse that sentencing Ralph Esposito to 25 months in jail was a “slap on the wrist” for stealing the the checks from her dead 79-year-old aunt.

Brackett said Esposito, who worked for her aunt as a handyman doing odd jobs around her Stamford home, was a repeat offender who made a habit out of stealing from his elderly customers.

 

NY man accused of Stamford train station slashing

STAMFORD — A New York man has been accused of slashing a man’s face during an attempted robbery at the downtown train station.

Eric Carrero, 25, of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been charged with armed robbery, second-degree assault, second-degree robbery, threatening and breach of peace.

At the arraignment early Friday afternoon, Judge Gary White said the incident was extremely violent and ordered Carrero held in lieu of a $100,000 court appearance bond.

The 22-year-old victim said he had just gotten off a train from New Haven about 11 p.m.

 

Road rage leads to beating on High Ridge in Stamford

STAMFORD-A husband and wife who got cut off by another car while driving down High Ridge Road from North Stamford late Wednesday afternoon were shoved and beaten up by three men after pulling over in a parking lot to settle the matter, police said.

Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said the couple ended up being cut off by a Honda Accord at about 5:30 p.m. and while at the next traffic light the husband and Accord driver began arguing and yelling at each other.

The same thing happened at the next light, where the husband demanded that the Accord driver apologize to his wife, Pinto said.

 

Danbury firefighters rescue injured man from construction site

DANBURY - Firefighters with the assistance of a local tree company pulled a construction worker to safety Thursday after the man received a head injury while working inside the basement of the structure.

The home on Forty Acre Mountain Road was under construction when a worker was hit in the head “due to the malfunction of a concrete pump truck’s boom,” authorities said.

Because the man was located inside the basement of the unfinished structure and due to steep slopes along the property, firefighters had to use a variety of rescue technics to bring the man to safety.

 

Brookfield police dog getting body armor

BROOKFIELD - Argo, the Brookfield Police Department K9, will soon be getting something new to wear: body armor.

Argo’s bullet and stab protective vest is thanks to a charitable donation from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

K9 Argo’s vest is sponsored by a fundraiser hosted by Protectors of Animals of East Hartford.

 

Stolen in Stamford, car still missing

STAMFORD-The recovery of a stolen car by Narcotics and Organized Crime squad officers Tuesday night prompted a warning by another car owner whose wheels have yet to be found.

Jonathan Saint Victor left his white 2013 Nissan Altima with tinted windows and license plate 611 ZKM running in front of his Ludlow Street home on Dec. 21 at about 8 p.m. Saint Victor said he parked the car and left it running for about 10 minutes and when he went outside to get back in it, the car was gone.

 

Norwalk Gold Rush robber sentenced in Stamford

STAMFORD-A Hartford man who helped rob the Gold Rush jewelry store in Norwalk in September 2016 was sentenced to eight years in jail at the Stamford courthouse Wednesday.

Following his sentence, Donald Outlaw, 29, will have to serve seven years special parole, where any violation of the law can immediately land him back in jail. Judge John Blawie presided over the sentencing, which was the result of a plea agreement, his attorney Daniel Weiner said.
