Police probe sexual misconduct, stalking allegations against McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks

The Illinois State Police are investigating McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks in connection with allegations that include sexual misconduct and stalking, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Reached by phone Friday evening, Franks, D-Marengo, denied any wrongdoing and wasn’t sure who might have made allegations against him.

Gun control, health care hot topics at 14th Congressional District candidates forum

BATAVIA – Candidates seeking the Republican nomination for the 14th Congressional District discussed a variety of issues in front of potential voters Thursday, including gun control and health care.

The seven candidates are Rep. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove; state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; financial futures trader Ted Gradel of Naperville; Warrenville business owner Jerry Evans; former Kendall County Republican Party Chairman James Marter; former appointee to the U.S. Commerce Department Catalina Lauf of Woodstock; and Army veteran Anthony Catella of St.

 

Former Carpentersville teacher sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting 2 boys

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A former employee of Algonquin-based Community School District 300 who lives in Geneva was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting two minors she knew.

After a two-hour hearing, Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler sentenced Lindsay P. Anderson, 31, of the 900 block of Foxwood Drive, Geneva, to six years in prison for a charge of aggravated sexual abuse and four years on a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, both felonies.

 

FDA approves first treatment for kids with peanut allergy

WASHINGTON – The first treatment for peanut allergies is about to hit the market, representing a big step toward better care for all kinds of food allergies but still a long way from a cure.

Friday’s approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration promises to bring some relief to families who’ve lived in fear of an accidental bite of peanuts at birthday parties and play dates, school cafeterias and restaurants.

 

Huntley School District 158 investigating incident in which bus parked too closely to train tracks

Huntley School District 158 administrators are investigating an incident in which one of its buses was stopped at an “unsafe distance” from the train crossing at Route 47 and Main Street while a freight train was passing.

The bus did not have any children on it and was empty except for the driver.

Although “no harm” resulted from the incident, the district said a photo “appears to show a very dangerous situation that is unacceptable and not in keeping with our established transportation safety practices.”

Truck crashes into pole in Johnsburg, driver flees scene

A pickup truck crashed into a telephone pole in the 3300 block of Riverside Drive in Johnsburg, leading to a blown transformer Friday evening.

Mike Majercik, battalion chief for the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, said when emergency crews arrived, the driver had left the scene, so no one was treated for injuries.

The driver broke the pole, so officials called ComEd and waited for the company’s arrival before clearing the scene.

 

Mexico president: Caravans waning following crackdown

MEXICO CITY – President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Friday that he expects more caravans of Central American migrants and asylum seekers to emerge, but he sees the phenomenon that became a political football in the United States in recent years as waning.

A week after armored National Guard troops and immigration agents broke up what was left of the most recent caravan in southern Mexico, loading men, women and children onto buses for likely deportation, López Obrador suggested that fewer will come in future groups.

 

Britain’s departure from European Union official

LONDON – So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu.

With little fanfare, Britain left the European Union on Friday after 47 years of membership, taking a leap into the unknown in a historic blow to the bloc.

The U.K.’s departure became official at 11 p.m. local time, midnight in Brussels, where the EU is headquartered.
