Fire forces closure in forest area

The Deschutes National Forest implemented emergency fire closures Friday to protect the public and maintain firefighter safety as crews continue to work on the roughly 80-acre Green Ridge Fire near Camp Sherman, a forest spokeswoman announced.Beginning Friday, the public will not be allowed in the closure area in the Sisters Ranger District and on certain roads and trails around the perimeter of the area until the emergency closure is lifted.

 

BOTC moves mortgage center

Bank of the Cascades has moved its mortgage center from downtown Bend to the Old Mill District to increase customer convenience, one of several such changes the bank announced Thursday.Moving the mortgage center to 233 S. W. Wilson Ave. gives it a more central location and places it near several area title companies, bank officials said in a news release.

Sisters procession honors fallen firefighter

The rain started falling in Sisters just as the body of John Hammack made its way into the city during a procession honoring his sacrifice on Friday.Rescue workers recovered Hammack’s body this afternoon, a day after a treetop landed on him while fighting a fire Thursday morning. A La Pine man who shook his girlfriend's 2-year-old son was sentenced Thursday to 70 months in prison.Jeffrey Scott Neeley, 23, was initially charged with two counts of first-degree assault.He pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of second-degree assault, related to the Nov.

 

CODE searches dispensary

Crook County’s only medical marijuana dispensary was searched Thursday afternoon and its owner arrested by officers with the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement team.Ryan Daniel Cole, 36, owner of the Crook County Compassion Clinic & Club, was booked into the Crook County Jail on two counts of unlawful delivery of marijuana Thursday evening, and later released.

Suspected Bend arsons overnight grow to eight sites

A number of fires believed deliberately set this morning in Bend grew from three to eight after further investigation, Bend Police announced this afternoon.Three fires were discovered burning in proximity to one another on the city east side between 2:30 a. m. and 5:06 a. m., said Bend Police Sgt. Dan Ritchie. Later in the day, police and Bend Fire Department investigators discovered four more attempts to set vehicles afire around Southeast Airpark Drive, Ritchie said.
