Lawmakers, advocates dig in for Deal's decision on gun bill

ATLANTA — Gov. Nathan Deal could deal another major blow to conservatives in the Republican-dominated Legislature as lawmakers await his decision on another controversial piece of legislation: a bill to allow college and university students ages 21 and up to carry a concealed handgun on campus with a permit.
Rep. Buzz Brockway, a Republican from Lawrenceville, co-sponsored the bill, but said he did not want to predict which way the governor would lean.

 

Savannah-Chatham police seek information on string of Forsyth robberies

Savannah-Chatham police are investigating two armed robberies in two days in the Forsyth Park area, with suspects possibly linked to other recent incidents, Eunicia Baker, police spokeswoman, said.On April 2 at about 9:30 p.m. a man and woman were sitting in a heavily wooded area of the park when three suspects approached, brandished a gun and demanded the victim’s possessions. The victims complied. The suspects ran southwest through the park with the victim’s belongings. No injuries were reported.

 

Amtrak Train 89 to Savannah derails near Philadelphia, injuring some

CHESTER, Pa. — Authorities say an Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia, and some injuries are being reported.Service on the Northeast Corridor between New York and Philadelphia has been suspended.Amtrak said Train 89 was heading from New York to Savannah, Georgia, when it struck a backhoe that was on the track in Chester, about 15 miles outside of Philadelphia.The impact derailed the lead engine of the train. About 341 passengers and seven crew members were on board.

AUGUSTA — Augusta has approved one of the region’s first local drone laws, which bans the unmanned aircraft from flying in areas where 100 or more people might gather.
Officials with the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association knew of no local drone laws in Georgia besides the proposed Augusta ordinance, The Augusta Chronicle reported.

 

Aiken County residents: S.C. police did illegal cavity search

AIKEN, S.C. — Two South Carolina residents are suing the city of Aiken and its department of public safety over what they say was an illegal cavity search in broad daylight.
The Aiken Standard reports Elijah Pontoon and Lakey Hicks filed the lawsuit last September. It was moved to federal court in November. Hicks and Pontoon are seeking actual, punitive and consequential damages and legal fees.
