Editorial: Law, not the president, must take precedence

President Donald Trump’s pardon of former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio sent a clear message to America — several messages, actually. But the controversial pardon should not become a guide for other law officials who might want to play loose with the rules, or for judges and juries who might hear future cases similar to the one for which Arpaio was convicted.

 

Prince William, Kate expecting third child

LONDON — Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, will soon welcome a third child to the royal nursery.
Kensington Palace officials announced Monday that the former Kate Middleton is pregnant, but was not feeling well enough to attend an engagement later in the day.
As with her other two pregnancies, she is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, or acute morning sickness. She is being cared for at the royal couple’s apartment in London’s Kensington Palace.

There really are no limits on the thoughtfulness of children.

My wife and I had just been discussing adding a moat around the house to keep the kids away. I mean, we’re redoing the front yard anyway, and it’s always nice to include some sort of water feature.
Posh said she thought a moat might work. I argued that the kids would just download some new app that turned their smartphones into ski boats.

 

Activate Allen County: Volunteers needed to count pedestrians, cyclists

Volunteers are needed to help count the number of people who ride bicycles or walk during a semi-annual survey throughout Allen County. The project begins on Monday, Sept. 11 and continues until Sunday, Sept. 17 throughout the region.

 

FITNESS TIPS: Make the most out of the end of class

Last week we shared fitness tips for those getting ready to take part in fitness classes. Today we share tips for when the class over:
• Cool down. It’s important to slowly lower your heart rate and prevent injury, so stay for the cool down! If you find yourself wanting to leave early, dismiss yourself quietly and give the instructor a hand signal to let him or her know you’re okay and not leaving because you don’t feel well. If you know you’ll need to leave early, let the instructor know prior to class starting.

 

Six agencies get United Way innovation grants

LIMA — The United Way of Greater Lima awarded its 2017 Innovation Grants to six local non-profit agencies on Thursday.
The recipients included:
• Salvation Army, for “Girl Talk,” a program that seeks to change the perspective from which young girls see themselves through many important avenues.

 

Sisters have LCC eyes a smilin’

LIMA — You only have to cover the Lima Central Catholic girl’s golf team once to learn how to spell the last name of Mulcahy.
There are three Mulcahy sisters playing on the team this year, junior Meghan and freshman twins Mary Kelly and Erin.
The sisters have led the LCC team to an early record of 38-5 and are led in scoring by Mary Kelly with an average score of 40 for nine holes, followed closely by Erin at 41 and Meghan at 42.

 

Lima man badly hurt in Sunday fight; one arrested

LIMA — Lima police had no additional information Monday on a Sunday night fight that left one man seriously injured.
Robert Smith II, 22, of Lima was listed in critical condition at St. Rita’s Medical Center late Sunday, according to a spokesman from the Lima Police Department. Police had no update on his condition Monday. A spokeswoman at St. Rita’s also said Monday afternoon that no additional information on Smith’s condition was available “at this time.”

South Woodlawn Avenue at Spencerville Road, Lima — A hit-skip traffic accident was investigated Saturday.

 

Another Labor Day without labor reform

This Labor Day, millions of Americans will celebrate their day off with backyard barbecues and a family trip to the beach.
But we shouldn’t lose sight of the holiday’s deeper meaning. Labor Day celebrates employees’ “freedom of association,” our right to choose the workplace best suited to us.
