Chris Shelton: Labor unions not going away

It’s Labor Day, and that means another round of stories claiming that unions have no place in our global, high-tech economy world.
Now, that’s really fake news.

Fear of robots taking jobs spurs a bold idea: Guaranteed pay

HONOLULU (AP) — Driverless trucks. Factory robots. Delivery drones. Virtual personal assistants.
As technological innovations increasingly edge into the workplace, many people fear that robots and machines are destined to take jobs that human beings have held for decades. For many affected workers, retraining might be out of reach —unavailable, unaffordable or inadequate.
What then?

Grade card: Buckeyes don’t have all the answers

A grade card on Ohio State’s 49-21 win over Indiana in its opener, a game that got better for the Buckeyes the later it got.
OFFENSE: B
Ohio State’s offense took a big turn for the better in the second half. In the first two quarters, its attempts to move the football looked uncomfortably like its offense at the end of last season. OSU was behind at halftime and in one stretch punted on four consecutive possessions from the middle of the first quarter through the early second quarter.

Hamlin triumphs despite miscue

DARLINGTON, S.C. — Denny Hamlin overcame a bad miss of the pit road entrance to chase down Martin Truex Jr. with three laps left to win the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday night.
Hamlin checked up after sliding by the entrance with 54 laps left and fell behind Truex by 20 seconds. But Hamlin slowly reeled in Truex and passed him when his rival brushed the wall and got a flat tire.

Reds get 10 hits, 1 run in loss to Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Trevor Williams pitched out of the stretch for most of the day. He also pitched out of trouble all game long.
Williams tossed seven scoreless innings, Jordy Mercer hit his career-best 13th homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 on Sunday.
Cincinnati got eight of its 10 hits against Williams, but the right-hander wiggled his way out of every jam. He struck out five and walked one in his first win since Aug. 7.

Indians win 11th straight

DETROIT — Jose Ramirez isn’t finished setting records for extra-base hits.
In June, the Cleveland infielder became the first player in modern history to get 14 of them — 10 doubles, a triple and three homers — in a seven-game span.
Sunday, he packed all his damage into one game.
Ramirez tied a major league mark with five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs that deflected off Detroit outfielders, and the Indians routed the Tigers 11-1 for their 11th straight victory.

Bud Bash country concert supports military charity

LIMA — It is all about kicking back with a beer while enjoying live music, all while helping a good cause.
That sums up the motivation behind Bud Bash, an outdoor music event held Sunday at Lima Harley-Davidson. Now in its third year, the event, sponsored by Anheuser Busch, has brought a variety of country music performers to Allen County, with Aaron Lewis performing as the headliner this year.

Mattis: NKorea threat would bring massive military response

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday shot back at North Korea’s claimed test of a hydrogen bomb with a blunt threat, saying the U.S. will answer any threat from the North with a “massive military response — a response both effective and overwhelming.” Earlier, President Donald Trump threatened to halt all trade with countries doing business with the North, a veiled warning to China, and faulted South Korea for its “talk of appeasement.”
