EPA weighs thousands of reactions to Hudson PCB dredging

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency got about 2,000 comments from people and groups over whether the seven-year, $1.7 billion PCB dredging project of the Hudson River has been a success, the agency said WednesdayEPA must consider those comments as part of its final report on the the dredging project, which the agency expects to issue early this year.

A Cortlandt man is facing multiple felonies after he allegedly damaged a State Police cruiser and threatened his neighbors with a fence post.Police were called at about 9:10 p.m. on Jan. 11 to Broadway and 14th Street in Verplanck for a report of a man screaming.

Ex-Chamber chief to temporarily head United Way

Wallace Altes, who headed the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce as president and CEO for a dozen years, has been named interim president and CEO of the United Way of the Greater Capital Region.Altes fills a position that was left vacant when Brian Hassett departed last month for a similar post with the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. Altes' appointment is effective immediately.

 

Apartments, office building to fill Sixth Avenue block in Troy

A project in the works for more than three years is moving ahead in downtown Troy, the city's mayor announced Wednesday.City Station North, being developed by the United Group of Companies, will include a four-story office building, six-story apartment building, and a 250-space parking garage. The project will be built on the site of the former Bumstead Chevrolet dealership, later the Educational Opportunity Center, along the west side of Sixth Avenue between Congress and State streets.

 

Catskills casino to open on Feb. 8

MONTICELLO, N.Y. (AP) — The Resorts World Catskills casino northwest of New York City is set to open on Feb. 8 Resorts World Catskills will be the fourth of four Las Vegas-style casinos to open in upstate New York under an amendment to the state constitution approved by New York voters. The casino in the heart of the old "Borscht Belt" will be about 90 miles from Manhattan and will feature 150 table games and 2,150 slot machines. The overall $1.2 billion resort will have a hotel, an entertainment village, an indoor waterpark lodge and an 18-hole golf course.

 

Spectrum bringing gigabit internet to NY quickly

ROTTERDAM - Charter Communications is bringing high-speed internet to New York state faster than expected after acquiring the Time Warner Cable system back in 2016.The move by Charter's Spectrum unit will provide competition to Verizon's FiOS network, which has recently started offering gigabit internet speeds to residential customers as well in its limited Capital Region network.
