Amid growth, Saratoga Independent School gets new leader

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A growing private school in Saratoga Springs has named a new head of school.Saratoga Independent School's board of trustees named Lisa Brown to the role Wednesday, citing her long experience leading other private schools in the region and success expanding community partnerships for the school in her short time as interim head. Brown was named to the interim post in July, after longtime head Felice Karlitz stepped down.

 

Schenectady County jail guards rake in big overtime pay

SCHENECTADY - James Dickinson, a county corrections officer, earned $100,598 in overtime pay, surpassing his $60,406 base salary on his way to grossing $163,592 last year."He's working over 80 hours a week,"  county attorney Chris Gardner said Thursday about Dickinson.He was one of four employees, either working in the jail or as part of the sheriff's office patrol unit, who collected significantly more money by working extra hours, according to payroll records obtained by the Times Union under a Freedom of Information Law request.

 

Albany attorney Gaspar Castillo disbarred; former counsel censured

ALBANY – Longtime defense attorney Gaspar Castillo, who was already serving a three-year suspension from practicing law, was disbarred Thursday following allegations he inappropriately took $57,000 in money from clients.Castillo, an attorney since 1981, was one of two local attorneys disciplined. The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court, Third Department, also censured Matthew Mann, the former counsel for the Republican minority of the Albany County Legislature, for his improper involvement in a child custody case with people he knew.

 

Capital Region saw dip in jobs

The number of jobs in the Capital Region edged up 0.8 percent in December from year-earlier levels, the state Labor Department reported Thursday. The region had 474,100 jobs, up from 470,300 in December 2016. But the figure was down slightly from the 475,100 in November 2017.

A Berne man is facing a felony grand larceny charge after he allegedly ran up a $1,700 bill at a local strip club on a company credit card.

 

Gideon Putnam to remain closed; employees laid off

The water main break that flooded the basement at the Gideon Putnam has shuttered the hotel until Feb. 15. That was the best estimate of its management Delaware North. But on Wednesday spokesman Glen White said the hotel in Saratoga Spa State Park might be closed longer.

 

Sheriff: Jailed Queensbury man possesed contraband

QUEENSBURY - A man incarcerated in the Warren County jail was allegedly found to be in possession of concentrated cannibis, Warren County Sheriff's Office said.On Saturday, Andrew M. Jabot, 26, of Queensbury was charged with promoting prison contraband, a felony.

 

Boil-water advisory lifted in Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM - A boil-water advisory has been lifted in the town.The advisory was issued Saturday as crews worked to repair a water main break on Curry Road.The main is located between Altamont Avenue and Deforest Street intersections.Schenectady County's Department of Environmental Health lifted the order on Thursday. County officials said residents and business operators should flush water lines for 3 to 5 minutes and discard old ice made by ice machines.

 

Glenville man faces child pornography charges

COLONIE - A 33-year-old Glenville man faces felony charges after a half-year undercover investigation into the transmission of 4,000 videos and photographs containing child pornography, town police said.Kyle T. Pahl was arrested after town police said they searched a home connected to an IP address investigators said was used to transmit the pornographic images.
