Liar in fatal Schenectady fire gets 9 years in prison

ALBANY - Bryan Fish, the last defendant accused of perjury in a deadly fire that nearly led to the prosecution of an innocent man, was sentenced to nine years in prison Wednesday.In May, Fish admitted he lied under oath when he testified in front of a grand jury about a May 2, 2013 fire at 438 Hulett St., Schenectady, that killed David Terry, 32; his daughter, Layah, 3; his son, Michael, 2; and the children's 11-month-old half-brother, Donovan Duell. Sa'fyre Terry, now 9, suffered severe burns.

 

Corrosive soil partly to blame for water main breaks in Spa City

Cold temperatures and aging infrastructures are a bane to water mains. And in Saratoga Springs, there's another factor – corrosive soil. In the past few days, two water lines burst – an eight-inch on South Broadway on Sunday night and a smaller lateral line into Saratoga Spa State Park on Monday morning. And the city's Commissioner of Public Works Anthony "Skip" Scirocco is blaming, in part, corrosive soil.

 

Airline to offer nonstop flights between Albany, Myrtle Beach

A regional airline will begin offering nonstop flights between Albany and Myrtle Beach, S.C., on April 5. Elite Airways, with a fleet of CRJ-200 and CRJ-700 regional jets, will offer service on Thursdays and Sundays, with fares beginning at $199 one-way.

 

Jury acquits Albany man of stabbing

ALBANY - A jury acquitted a 23-year-old city man who authorities accused of repeatedly stabbing a 27-year-old man while yelling "I'm going to kill you."Jorge Obregon-Castro told jurors he acted in self defense and jurors sided with him.The jury began deliberations on Friday and delivered their verdict Tuesday, clearing Obregon-Castro of attempted murder and assault charges in connection with the Sept. 18, 2016 stabbing of a man outside 502 Washington Ave.

Lewza, town of Milton sued over sexual harassment case

The longtime confidential secretary to former Milton town Supervisor Daniel Lewza filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing him of "horrific and damaging sexual harassment" that she said lasted years and has left her emotionally scarred and struggling to find new employment.
The lawsuit, filed in state Supreme Court, said the town treated Lewza as if he committed no wrongdoing despite significant evidence of his alleged sexual harassment.

 

AG Schneiderman sues feds over net neutrality roll-back

AlbanyState Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman was among nearly two dozen state attorneys general to sue the federal government Tuesday over its roll-back of Internet neutrality rules last month.Twenty-two attorneys general filed a challenge in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia to challenge a decision by the Federal Communications Commission that ruled internet service providers could show perferential treatment to Internet content.

 

Developers' discovery of Rensselaer leads to apartment boom

RENSSELAER – Developers have discovered what city officials call the "Rensselaer Triangle" with  their multi-million dollar investments to build 210 apartment units over the last year has increased the city's housing units by 4.5 percent."Rensselaer is in the center of a development triangle – Regeneron, the State Capital and the Rensselaer Tech Park," said Charles Moore, the city's director of planning and development.
