Siena poll shows Cuomo with wind at his back

ALBANY — Voters' view of Gov. Andrew Cuomo is up as he and state lawmakers head into a tough budget season, a new poll shows.A Siena College poll released Tuesday morning shows that 62 percent of voters statewide have a favorable view of the governor, up 10 points from a 52 percent favorability rating in November, Siena's last statewide poll. It's the first time he has cracked 60 percent since last May.

 

Albany blue collar workers poised to get pay bump

City employees in general services, water and parks and recreation departments are poised to receive long-desired raises.The Albany Common Council will vote on a new contract for some 240 Blue Collar Workers Union employees in the three departments that would bump pay 2 percent retroactive starting April 1, 2017 and another 1 percent for 2018, according to the council's agenda for Thursday's meeting.

New book details lives of NY authors' foremothers

SARATOGA, N.Y. (AP) — Authors from around New York state are relating the lives of their foremothers in a new book. Editor Patricia Nugent, of Hadley, tells The Post-Star in Glens Falls that women's stories have been "silenced or drowned out" too often. The idea for the anthology, "Before They Were Our Mothers: Voices of Women Born Before Rosie Started Riveting," took root after a man showed up with mementos at the funeral for Nugent's mother. First, she learned small, heartwarming details: Her mother had starred in her high school play and had a German shepherd as a child.

Deficit, spending caps, fed tax plan will impact Cuomo's budget plans

When Gov. Andrew Cuomo lays out his 2018-19 budget plan on Tuesday there will be three numbers to keep in mind.First is the $4.4 billion deficit the state is facing heading into the 2018-19 fiscal year which begins April 1.Then there is the 2 percent state spending cap, excluding education and health care. Cuomo has maintained that cap, albeit with some gimmicks, since taking office in 2011.Keeping the cap bring would bring the deficit down to $1.7 billion, which may be the most important number that Cuomo and lawmakers will have to grapple with.
