Old Christmas party brings new joys to ARI clients

STAMFORD-One of the oldest Christmas parties in Stamford kicked off just like it has for well over a half-century when Santa arrived in a police car.

No, it wasn’t a case of Santa having too much cheer, but rather Santa bringing cheer to about 75 ARI clients at their annual party and gift give away Friday afternoon.

Gerard Gasparino, ARI’s manager of development and recreation, said all of his “consumers” look forward to the party and receiving gifts that are especially purchased for each recipient.

According to Taranov’s arrest warrant, inside one of the rooms police found plastic shelves holding 120 quart-sized glass jars of damp rye seed with loose-fitting lids covered with tin foil stamped with a date.

In the second room, shelves held 70 plastic 64-quart bins that each were connected to a sophisticated pipe air conditioning system capable of making any change of heat, coolness or humidity needed to grow the mushrooms, the police report said.

According to the report, the mushrooms were grown by using syringes to inject spores into the rye seed.

A Stamford woman with a ravenous thirst for flavored vodkas and white rum was arrested Thursday night for biting a store clerk who was trying to keep her from leaving a liquor store with five bottles of booze stuffed into her purse, police said.

Blanc said that while Scates was in the store the store clerk noticed that she was trying to walk out with five bottles of liquor hidden in her purse.

 

Smash-and-grabs keep confounding police in Stamford

Police responded to an alarm at about 4:30 a.m. Friday at the Verizon Store at 972 High Ridge Road to find a six foot by six foot plate glass window that had been crashed by some object.

In the other series of burglaries, which included two other stores on the south end of High Ridge, the thief used rocks to crash through glass front doors, while leaving the plate windows intact.

 

Stamford animal shelter receives gift for cats

STAMFORD — A $23,000 gift from a local nonprofit is being used to purchase roomy cat cages for the city’s animal shelter.

In addition to the cages, H/3 is paying for soundproofing that will prevent noise in the dog kennel from reaching other parts of the building, and for new speakers that will play soothing classical music in the cat room.

The animal control center relies heavily on help and donations from volunteer organizations like STARelief, which provides assistance to pet owners who find themselves unable to afford caring for their animals.

 

Report: Bobbie Valentine pitched as Japan ambassador

The 66-year-old, who currently serves as Sacred Heart University’s athletics director, has engaged in “preliminary discussions” with President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team regarding the position.

Judge declares mistrial in Stamford rape case

Just before lunch on Thursday, the jury sent Judge Richard Comerford out a note saying that it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on Frazier’s guilt or innocence.

According to testimony in the case the woman, who said she had been friends with Frazier for years, accepted an invitation to his home and watched television with him for a few hours while drinking on the night of the incident.

After the sexual encounter the woman went to her mother’s home, told her what happened and the police were called.

East Side smash-and-grab gets burglar nothing

Barcello said that the method the thief used was similar to those on High Ridge, but investigators have not yet found any surveillance video of the break-in at the salon which would tie them together.

No arrests have been made in the break-ins, although police released video tape of the High Ridge burglar.
