Royal Oak firefighters recuse two cats in garage fire

Royal Oak firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out in an attached garage, causing the evacuation of the house and the rescue of two cats.The fire was reported about 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of East Lincoln, south of Campbell Road. "When (firefighters) arrived there were flames coming through the roof," said Jim Cook, assistant fire chief.

A Bloomfield Township woman is the apparent victim of identity theft, recently discovering that $13,500 was withdrawn fraudulently from her bank account.According to Bloomfield Township police, the woman said she received a text message alert from her bank on May 5 regarding a low balance. She found that the missing money had been withdrawn fraudulently at three different branches of the bank.

 

New law affects victims' rights in courtroom

Defendants are now required by state law to be in court when victims and their families give statements on how they've been affected by the crime committed.P.A. 153 of 2018 was signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on May 23. It amends the Crime Victim's Rights Act to require a criminal defendant or juvenile offender to be physically present in the courtroom when a victim impact statement is read.
