Some wells in state have high levels of arsenic, uranium

The state Department of Public Health, assisted by local health officials, collected and analyzed samples from 674 private wells in Stamford. More than 11 percent of the 732 water samples collected contained uranium levels above the Environmental Protection Agency’s “safe limit.” “Homeowners in Stamford should probably test for arsenic, or at the very least uranium,” said Brian Toal, epidemiologist for the state Department of Public Health’s environmental health division.

Stamford Health lays off 20, citing lower revenue

The group that runs Stamford Hospital announced the layoffs Wednesday morning, citing challenges including fewer elective surgeries and inpatient services and problems “unique to Connecticut hospitals.” Though the announcement from Stamford Heath specifically identifies the hospital tax as a factor in its workforce restructuring, Stamford Health Chief Financial Officer Kevin Gage said politics wasn’t the driving force behind the decision to eliminate positions.

Judge shoots down gun deal, gives five-year sentence to Stamford man

STAMFORD-After being given the opportunity to have a gun possession charged erased, a Stamford man was sentenced to five years in jail Monday after he was caught firing a gun on a West Side street in December.

Dhakedi Jackson, 19, was sentenced by Judge Gary White, who in March 2016 agreed to erase a charge of conspiracy to commit criminal possession of a revolver in connection with a 2015 arrest of Jackson.

The friend was shot in the stomach and Jackson told police that he returned fire against the drive-by shooter with a .40 caliber semiautomatic Glock pistol.

 

Stamford police probe 911 prank

STAMFORD — A teen known to be an online gamer was the target of a 911 prank reporting someone was shot during a live-stream at a North Stamford home Friday night, police said.

Sgt. Gary Michell said officers rushed to a Briarwood Road, but found no one wounded by gunfire about 11:20 p.m. Friday.

The police department’s SWAT team did not respond Friday night.

 

Ex-boyfriend charged with home invasion in Stamford

STAMFORD-A Waterside man was charged over the weekend with the home invasion of a former West Side girlfriend early Sunday morning, police said.

Michell said that Danorbi Arias, 29, of Fairfield Avenue, was charged with home invasion, third-degree assault, interfering with a 911 call, criminal mischief, two counts of risk of injury to a child and second-degree larceny.
