Stocks are mixed as storm affects insurers, energy companies

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks finished little changed on Monday as investors focused on the effects of Tropical Storm Harvey. Insurance companies and oil drillers stumbled while refineries rose along with gasoline prices.

 

Hurricane Harvey leads to higher gas prices in Lima region, across U.S.

LIMA — Gas prices in the region saw an average increase of more than a dime since last week, reflecting a national trend that resulted from the impact of Hurricane Harvey.
In a nine-county area, gas prices rose 10.4 cents per gallon from the prior week’s average. The most significant jump came in Allen and Hancock counties, which experienced a 19 cent climb. Putnam County saw the second-largest increase, with the average gas price rising 17 cents. Prices in Shelby County surged 15 cents, making it one of four counties to experience a double-digit spike.

 

1 arrest made during Saturday OVI checkpoint

LIMA — One person was arrested Saturday evening for drunken driving and drug possession during a three-hour impaired-driving police checkpoint.
The operation was carried out by the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, with the assistance of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday on state Route 115 near old state Route 12 in Sugar Creek Township.
A total of 313 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with one vehicle being diverted to a secondary area, according to a statement from the patrol post.

 

Lima schools to participate in Labor Day Parade

LIMA — The Lima City School District is inviting all district staff, students and supporters to show their Spartan pride in this year’s Labor Day Parade.
The parade will be held Monday along Main Street in Lima. It has become a tradition for the school district to take part, and its group of walkers is always large, according to a statement from the district.

 

Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce offers savings on prescription medications

LIMA — The Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce is offering its members access to prescription medications at a 50 percent to 87 percent rate reduction. The savings are made possible by RxCut, whose program will be offered to members at no cost.
The RxCut card is generated by New Millennium Inc. of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and will be distributed in the Lima/Allen County market area. The program provides “substantial savings,” even to those with prescription benefits, according to a statement.

 

Delphos schools joins OhioCheckbook.com

DELPHOS — Delphos schools has teamed up with the Ohio Treasurer’s OhioCheckbook.com financial transparency program.
The website publishes more than 11,000 transactions representing more than $12 million in total spending over the past fiscal year. Delphos is the third Allen County school district to publish financial information on OhioCheckbook.com.

 

Lots for Soldiers expands to Lima, fundraiser planned

LIMA — A local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing residential lots to current and former military personnel is expanding its reach into Lima, and will hold a fundraiser to help more soldiers find housing.
Lots For Soldiers, which is based in Celina, recently moved into the Lima area after serving military servicemen and women in other areas in northwest Ohio.

 

Lima Rotary Club gives more than $30,000

LIMA — It was a busy day Monday for the Lima Rotary Club as the local chapter gave more than $30,000 in donations and scholarships.
More than 20 scholarships were given to nontraditional area students, with “nontraditional” referring to students who enroll in postsecondary education after spending time in the workforce or those working while studying at educational institutions in the Lima area. A program in place since 2001, a total of 916 scholarships have been awarded to date.

 

Cridersville man faces child endangerment charges

LIMA — A Cridersville man who became belligerent during and after a traffic stop Saturday evening faces a variety of charges, ranging from operating a motor vehicle while under the influence to endangering children.

 

Logan County sheriff: Boy crushed between lawn mower and truck dies

RUSHSYLVANIA (AP) — Authorities in western Ohio say an 18-month-old boy crushed between a lawn mower and a pickup truck over the weekend has died.
Logan County Sheriff Randall Dodds tells the Springfield News-Sun that investigators believe Elias Dickinson became pinned Sunday while his father was trying to jump-start a lawnmower. It happened in Rushsylvania, about 50 miles northwest of Columbus.
Dodds says the death is being treated as an accident.
