Grove girls shine at home invite

COLUMBUS GROVE — There’s nothing better than competing on your home course.
It couldn’t have been any sweeter for the Columbus Grove girls cross country team, as the Bulldogs ran away with the small school team title at Saturday’s Columbus Grove Invitational.
The Bulldogs placed their top five runners in the top 16 overall spots, en route to a stellar team score of 37, defeating second-place Lincolnview (110). Botkins finished third (115), while Hopewell-Loudon was a very close fourth (116). There were 12 schools figured into the team scoring.

Ohio police officer who punched man suspended 30 more days

EUCLID (AP) — A mayor in suburban Cleveland has added 30 more days to an unpaid suspension for a white police officer who was recorded on a cellphone repeatedly punching a black man and hitting his head on pavement after a traffic stop last month.
Euclid Mayor Kristen Gail announced the added suspension for patrol officer Michael Amiott on Friday. The Euclid police chief previously suspended Amiott for 15 days for the Aug. 12 encounter and added a number of conditions before Amiott would be allowed to return to patrol duties.

 

Ohio State ex-director resigns over speaking fees questions

COLUMBUS (AP) — A tenured Ohio State professor has resigned after a review alleged he improperly accepted up to $200,000 for speaking engagements across the country.
The Columbus Dispatch reports Terrell Strayhorn left the College of Education and Human Ecology in May after being fired two months earlier as director of the university’s Center for Higher Education Enterprise and placed on indefinite unpaid leave.

 

Prosecutors to seek death penalty in car lot slayings

CLEVELAND (AP) — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a man charged with killing a couple at their used car lot in Cleveland.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said Friday that Joseph McAlpin was re-indicted on capital charges in the slayings of Trina Tomola and Michael Kuznik. McAlpin was earlier indicted on aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and other charges. The new indictment includes capital specifications to some of the charges that could result in the death penalty if McAlpin is convicted.

 

Federal agency approves use of Ohio natural gas pipeline

COLUMBUS (AP) — A federal agency has given a company permission to begin using completed sections of its high-pressure natural gas pipeline in Ohio.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has told Dallas-based Energy Transfer it can use its completed 42-inch diameter, 191-mile long pipeline from Carroll County in eastern Ohio to Defiance in northwest Ohio. A twin 42-inch diameter line remains under construction for the $4.2 billion Rover pipeline project.

 

Ex-football player files paperwork for US House bid in Ohio

CLEVELAND (AP) — A former NFL player has filed paperwork indicating he plans to seek an Ohio congressional seat as a Republican in 2018.
Cleveland.com reports 32-year-old Anthony Gonzalez submitted paperwork Monday with the Federal Election Commission to run for the 16th District congressional seat held by Republican Jim Renacci, who plans to run for governor next year.
Gonzalez has not formally announced his candidacy. Reports surfaced last month that he was contemplating a congressional bid.

 

Ohio airport rolling out self-sanitizing bins at checkpoint

GREEN (AP) — An Ohio airport says it’s the first in the world to place self-sanitizing, germ-killing mats inside bins at security checkpoints.
The Canton Repository reports the Akron-Canton Airport has added liners using mineral nanocrystals that react to light and create a germ-killing chemical reaction.
The airport says the mats are more effective at killing germs than bleach and continuously break down organic contaminants.

 

Top political donor demands civility after Trump remarks

COLUMBUS (AP) — The billionaire CEO of the company behind Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works says he plans to demand civility from politicians he supports after President Donald Trump’s response to the deadly Charlottesville, Virginia, rally.
L Brands founder Leslie Wexner says he was shocked Trump appeared to blame “both sides” for the violence that broke out at the white nationalist rally Aug. 12.

 

Judge OKs use of drone to provide jurors look at crime scene

WARREN (AP) — An Ohio judge has approved the use of a drone to capture crime scene images that will be shown to jurors during an upcoming murder trial.
The Warren Tribune Chronicle reports Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice in northeast Ohio’s Trumbull County gave his approval Thursday for using images from a drone at next month’s trial of 48-year-old Nasser Hamad, who is charged with fatally shooting two people and wounding three others in February.
Hamad could face the death penalty if convicted.
