A slow Labor Day caps a down summer at the box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) — With no new wide releases, Hollywood basically took the Labor Day weekend off and put an end to what’s expected to be the lowest earning summer movie going season since 2006 — the last time the industry saw a sub-$4 billion summer.

Car Talk: Alarming noises while driving in snow likely have a simple explanation

Dear Car Talk:
I have an ‘07 Chevy Tahoe. I had an ‘02 prior to this one, and it was indestructible. The ‘07 has an issue that no one can figure out. This sounds ridiculous, but I’ve got witnesses who have driven it and have had the same experience. When I drive my Tahoe in the snow, it bucks and bangs and sounds like a piston is going to come up through the hood — but only in frozen precipitation! This does not happen in the rain or in nice weather, only when it’s snowing. What the heck? — Courtney

Editorial: Changing of the guard in today’s work force

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to the needs of the American worker this Labor Day.
From the executive board room to the union hall, today’s business and labor leaders find themselves dealing with a changing work force like never before.
It is being driven by millennials — men and women in their 20s and early 30s. They now are the largest age group in the U.S work force, taking the keys away from baby boomers, who are retiring in huge numbers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The change is significant.

Thomas Lucente: Natural disasters: The lessons we never learn

Another natural disaster, another circus of politicians falling over each other to send billions of dollars stolen from the people to the disaster zone.
Meanwhile, clueless and whiny leftists accuse merchants of gouging because market forces cause prices to increase when supplies are low as if this is some new phenomenon. Notably, the same leftists whining about gouging are not emptying their bank accounts and donating all their property to disaster relief as they believe the merchants should be doing.

Rookie Luplow’s first HR helps Pirates top Reds

PITTSBURGH — Jordan Luplow picked up the first two hits of his career, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning, to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Saturday night.
Luplow beat out an infield single in the second for his first hit. His second went considerably farther, reaching the first row of seats in left-center field with two men aboard as Pittsburgh ended a four-game losing streak.
Starling Marte added three hits for Pittsburgh. A.J. Schugel (4-0) picked up the victory in relief.
