Wickliffe Schools installing new security devices

Wickliffe Schools is installing security devices on every classroom door in the district as a safety precaution. After hearing about the recent school shootings, Wickliffe parent Jodee Mulroy decided to do something to make the district safer. Mulroy said she consulted with other parents, the school board, police officers and the fire chief to discuss options.

 

Lake County Fair gives 4-H members time to shine

This week thousands of teens will be whirling and twirling on the amusement rides at the Lake County Fair in Painesville Township. Jessica Slansky won't be among them.Instead, the dedicated 4-H member said she'll be having a different type of fun readying her animals for competition and spending time with friends in the fairgrounds' barns.

 

Levy for Lake County Library District placed on November ballot

The Lake County commissioners are placing a 1.0-mill renewal levy on real estate within the Lake County Library District (Morley Library) on the Nov. 6 ballot. The action, if approved, would make the existing five-year renewal a continuing levy, with no increase, the Lake County Library District confirmed.

 

Sweet corn in stock at Secor's Farm Market in Perry

The wait is over.Larry Secor reveals that his super sweet corn is now being picked and is available at his Secor's Farm Market, 4940 North Ridge Road (Route 20) in Perry. Homegrown cantaloupes, potatoes, green beans and other produce are also on the market stand, while blueberries and red raspberries are abundant for those wishing to pick their own.

 

Mentor Public Library holding Summer Reading Finale Party

Families can celebrate the conclusion of the summer during Mentor Public Library's Summer Reading Finale Party.The party starts at 6 p.m., Aug. 2, at the library's Read House-8215 Mentor Ave. in Mentor.Children can make crafts, enjoy snacks and see if they won one of the library's Summer Reading prizes.

Lake County reports 1st human West Nile virus case for 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio >> The state has reported Ohio's first human West Nile virus case this year.Ohio's Department of Health said Monday that a 71-year-old Lake County man had to be hospitalized.Most people receive the virus through bites from infected mosquitoes. Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in Ohio most often occur from May through October.

 

Mentor grad Joy Mason earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Ambassador Girl Scout Joy Mason has been presented the prestigious Gold Award at the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Gold Award Celebration on June 16, 2018.The Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouting and is comparable to Eagle Scout for boys.A Gold Award project requires at least 80 hours to complete, but once involved, it was hard for Joy to limit her time.

 

Installation being on ADA accessible Kayak and launch in Eastlake's Erie Road Park

Construction has begun on the new ADA accessible kayak ramp and launch at Erie Road Park in Eastlake.The park which is located at the intersection of Admiral Drive and Erie Road is the only public access point for boating and canoeing in a 15-mile span of Lake Erie between Wildwood Park in Cleveland and the Mentor Lagoons Marina.
