Climber helped from South Sister

An 82-year-old man spent Sunday night on South Sister before being rescued Monday by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue personnel Monday.Robert Haynes began his annual solo climb Sunday morning and summited, according to a news release.

Bear Creek principal dismissed

The Bend-La Pine Schools board has voted unanimously to terminate Matt Montoya’s contract at tonight’s school board meeting.Montoya was hired as the principal of Bear Creek Elementary in 2010.

 

High Desert Museum president retiring

The president at the High Desert Museum plans to retire, the museum south of Bend announced Monday.President Janeanne Upp plans to leave the post after nearly six years, according to the museum. She started in early 2008.

 

Tire theft alleged; security guard calls it in

A Redmond man is accused of stealing about 20 tires from behind a Bend car dealership early Sunday morning.Christopher Hansen, 46, was being held without bail Monday night at the Deschutes County jail, said a deputy at the jail. He is charged with first-degree theft and a parole violation.A security guard with Patrol Services International spotted a car pulling a trailer full of tires at around 2:45 a.m. at Smolich Motors on U.S. Highway 20 in Bend, according to the Bend-based company.

 

Traffic stop, chase leads to bomb charge

A Crooked River Ranch man is accused of leading a Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputy on a chase Sunday night and having pieces for a pipe bomb in his trunk.Thomas Robbins, 53, was being held Monday night at the Deschutes County jail on charges of attempting to elude a police officer and possession of a destructive device, according to the jail website.

 

Trucker overturns tractor-trailer

A commercial truck driver crashed Monday morning on state Highway 31 south of La Pine after falling asleep at the wheel.Dennis Chaffin, 54, from Chilcoot, Calif., was cited for careless driving and failure to obey traffic control devices, according to Oregon State Police.Chaffin was driving around 5 a.m. westbound on Highway 31 near the intersection of U.S. Highway 97 when he reportedly fell asleep.

 

Pilot in fatal crash identified

The pilot of the crashed aircraft Sunday near Prineville airport was identified by Prineville Police Department as Murray Allan Crowe, 47, of Crooked River Ranch.Crowe was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing an experimental Challenger II aircraft at around 11:30 a. m., according to police Sunday.
