In recent years, coastal regions have been increasingly littered with waste washed up on the shores. This is a result of over-dependence on single-use items, especially those made of plastic, as well as inadequate waste-management systems. The Flipflopi Project seeks to address these challenges by empowering local communities to harness solutions that upcycle single-use plastic waste. Lamu’s waste management challenges In 2015, Ben Morison founded the Flipflopi Project as a way to tackle plastic waste washed up on the shores of the Lamu archipelago in Kenya.
