Maupin leads Cyclones to second straight win over 'Toppers

JOHNSON CITY — Cade Maupin, a transfer from Dobyns-Bennett, made a one-handed, sideline-toetap interception to thwart a potential go-ahead drive and Elizabethton beat Science Hill for the second straight season, 28-20 on Friday night.
“Two years in a row (beating Science Hill),” said Cyclones coach Shawn Witten. “This is one of the biggest victories in my 13 years, no question, especially over here at this place.
“It was a tremendous effort by our coaches and our players. It was a battle out there tonight, guys cramping and hanging in there.

 

Hawkins man indicted for theft of school board member's Jeep

ROGERSVILLE — A Hawkins County man who allegedly stole Rogersville school board member Todd Biggs’ Jeep two years ago after admittedly eating mushrooms in the woods was indicted Monday on a charge of theft over $10,000 by a Hawkins County grand jury.
Lorne Ray Wallen, 51, 1322 Longs Bend Road, Rogersville, also has an unrelated arson charge pending from last month, when he allegedly set his mother’s hay field on fire after she wouldn’t immediately give him a ride.
Wallen was charged with the theft of Biggs’ Jeep on the morning of Aug. 2, 2017.

JONESVILLE, VA - Dr. Kay Gibson Matlock, age 70, of Jonesville, VA, entered into Heaven on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Kay was born on August 25, 1948 in Kingsport, TN to the Late James Leonard Gibson and Pearl L. Gibson.
Kay retired from Stone Mountain Health Services after 25 years of service. She received her RN degree from East Tennessee State University, her Bachelors degree in Health Care Administration at St.

 

Hal Lynn Hunt

Hal Lynn Hunt, age 69, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 22, 2019 following a courageous battle with cancer.
The family would like to give a special thanks to UT Hospice Services, especially Sara, whom he fell in love with the first time they met.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, August 25, 2019, at Christian-Sells Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Gary Gibson and Rev. Robby Drinnon officiating. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 26, 2019, in Quarryville Cemetery.

 

Delma (Carter) Shelton

SAN DIEGO, CA - Delma (Carter) Shelton, a long-time resident of the San Diego area, passed away peacefully at her home in San Diego on July 18, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born on June 19th, 1934 in Hiltons, VA to Asa & Sibble (McMurray) Carter. Delma grew up on a small farm along with her four brothers, Fred, Frank, Scott and Kermit.

 

Laura Woodside Shelton

BURNETT, TX - Laura Woodside Shelton, age 59, Burnett, Texas, born May 21, 1960 passed away peacefully on August 20, 2019. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Woodside and Nancy Woodside Mangus; her husband, James R Shelton Sr; her sister, Tara Jones; her daughter, Elizabeth Nigrelli; and a grand-daughter, Adriana Gladson.   She was a cake decorator for 25+ years and a trained Water Safety Instructor.

 

Jeffrey Bruce Morrison

KINGSPORT - Jeffrey Bruce Morrison, 34, of Kingsport, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 after a decade-long struggle with facial nerve pain (atypical trigeminal neuralgia) and depression. 
Jeff grew up in Kingsport, and attended Dobyns-Bennett High School, where he was an exemplary student and   captain of the basketball team his senior year.  Jeff graduated with honors from Clemson University with a degree in biochemistry, and he then worked as a research assistant at the St.

GATE CITY, VA - Michael “Mike” Buchanan, 59, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019 at  Vanderbilt Medical Center, Nashville, TN after a brief illness.

Wanda Knox Jones

ROGERSVILLE - Wanda Knox Jones, age 79, of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2019, in the comfort of her home.
 She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Nancy Reeves Knox.
Wanda was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church and spent 30 years as a dedicated employee of Dodge. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and loved by many.
Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years, J.R.

 

Robin D. Arthur

Robin D. Arthur, 59, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019.
He had been a member and a servant at Shades of Grace storefront church. His testimony was one of the love for Jesus. May his soul rest with our Risen Lord where all things will be made new and all the torments of a troubled mind will never be known. He will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Shades of Grace United Methodist Church at 4pm. Special music will be shared by 'Living Loved'.
