NBA legend Kobe Bryant, daughter killed in helicopter crash

CALABASAS, Calif. – NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others were killed Sunday when their helicopter plunged into a steep hillside in dense morning fog in Southern California, his sudden death at age 41 touching off an outpouring of grief for a star whose celebrity transcended basketball.

The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities said nine people were aboard and are presumed dead.

 

Helicopter in crash that killed Kobe Bryant previously owned by state of Illinois

The luxury helicopter that crashed Sunday morning in California, killing all nine people on board including former NBA star Kobe Bryant, was once owned by the state of Illinois.

The Sikorsky S-76B helicopter was built in 1991, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s aircraft registry. The state of Illinois used it from 2007 to 2015, according to helicopter information database Helis.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump told his national security adviser he wanted to maintain a freeze on military assistance to Ukraine until it aided political investigations into his Democratic rivals, according to a report in The New York Times on Sunday.

The newspaper said John Bolton's description of his exchange with Trump appears in drafts of his forthcoming book.

 

Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant dies in helicopter crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant, the 18-time NBA All-Star who won five championships and became one of the greatest basketball players of his generation during a 20-year career spent entirely with the Los Angeles Lakers, died in a helicopter crash Sunday. He was 41.

Bryant died in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, California, a source told The Associated Press.

 

'Dry' Sunday to follow heavy snowfall in McHenry County

After getting about 4 inches of snow Friday and Saturday, McHenry County-area residents can expect a drier Sunday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Lenning said there were 1 to 2 inches of snow as of 7 a.m. Saturday in the southeastern part of McHenry County, while the northwest part of the county saw about 4 inches.

“We were kind of calling for generally 3 to 5 in the higher amounts, and obviously less in some areas,” he said.

 

Dog missing after structure fire in Woodstock

No one was injured but a dog is missing after a structure fire Saturday in the 100 block of North Street in Woodstock.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded at 7:22 p.m. to a fire in the basement of a 1½-story home.

Two residents were home at the time and called 911 to report the fire, according to a news release from the fire district.

No residents or firefighters were injured in the fire.

Mushers with Free Spirit Sled Demo Team prepare to show off sport in Harvard

For Jason Hussong and his fellow mushers, it’s the dog days of winter.

As leader of the Free Spirit Sled Demo Team – part of Free Spirit Siberian Rescue based in Harvard – Hussong and his team of about 15 spend the season demonstrating their sport to both raise awareness of the rescue group and keep mushing alive.

His love of mushing began with his dogs, and there’s no place he’d rather be than at the helm of a sled pulled by his Huskies.
